Wavy
SZA feat. James Fauntleroy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think I'm bad as hell
I got issues, out of line
Sayin' tomorrow I'll do the dishes
Never come
Easy bake, easy wake, oven
Just give as much as you take
Forgive as much as you hate
Or get the fuck out

I've been in the dugout (dugout)

Lookin' for a way out (way out)
You know just takin' it slow (oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Now I'm feeling worn out (worn out)
Lookin' for a way out (way out)
Somebody show me the door (oh, yeah, yeah, yeah)

I was wavy
I've been waitin' for you, boy
And I was drownin'
I went crazy
I've been goin' crazy, boy
I found out, this the the way out
Now I'm wavy
Now I'm wavy

You know just takin' it slow
(Oh, yeah, yeah) babe (yeah)
Somebody show me the door
(Oh, yeah, yeah) babe (yeah)
You know just takin' it slow, babe
Somebody show me the ropes, babe

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to SZA ft. James Fauntleroy's song "Wavy" speak to the inner conflicts that one experiences while pursuing a relationship. SZA opens the first verse by acknowledging her "bad as hell" attitude and the issues she's currently dealing with. She references her failure to complete tasks, such as doing the dishes, and how she is constantly in a state of chaos. The line "Easy bake, easy wake, oven" could be interpreted as SZA's desire for an easier and less hectic life. However, she understands that relationships require compromise and urges her partner to do the same: "Just give as much as you take."

In the chorus, SZA speaks to the confusing emotions she experienced while looking for love: "I was wavy, I've been waiting for you, boy / And I was drowning." She goes on to say she's "been going crazy" until she found a way out, which is being "wavy." "Wavy" might represent the feeling of being "up and down" in a relationship or the emotional journey one takes while searching for love. SZA then reiterates the chorus by saying she's "now wavy."

Furthermore, the second verse speaks to the struggle of wanting to leave a relationship but not knowing how. The line "I've been in the dugout, looking for a way out" could relate to the sports term for players waiting to be brought into the game. SZA might be waiting for someone to give her a chance to start fresh. She finds herself "worn out" and needing someone to show her the way out. The repetition of the chorus confirms that being wavy is the solution to getting out of that emotional state.
