“Masks often reveal some truth of the person behind them and are helpful in removing inhibition,” says Joe Schmoe, leader and producer of the band S C H M O E.
“Combined with improvisational performance, such anonymity or false persona can provide for freedom of expression unreachable as one’s naked, normal self…at least that’s the theory I am working under.”
In keeping with this perhaps bizarre theoretical alter-ego exploration, all of the members of S C H M O E have adopted pseudonyms (to a man the band denies that this has anything whatsoever to do with shame at having their true identities tied to the project).
Stylz Bitchly plays bass in the band; Dave The Wave - guitar. Tom Thom plays drums and Joe sings & adds instruments here and there. Joe also writes and produces. S C H M O E typically gather in studio to improvise music on top of rhythm beds and sound experiments supplied by Joe beforehand, these he then arranges and builds upon compositionally.
S C H M O E’s first work was a soundtrack for a short film called Fritz’s Final Flight. The music from this soundtrack was further developed and some newer material written for the band’s first album ‘An Everyday’, released in 2010.
A second release, the twenty-one minute ‘sound sculpture’ called ‘A Cup Of Joe’ was also released in 2010.
In 2011 S C H M O E signed with White Label Music (WLM).
To present day S C H M O E have continued to develop their particular methods of composition and have recorded a 2012 album for WLM.
