It's only in the past 6 or so years, that she has discovered just how effective music can be in connecting with Him on a really deep level. Her hope is that her music will inspire its listeners to venture deeper into worship, and to fall more deeply in love with God.
Sarah became interested in music at a fairly young age and had her first few attempts at writing songs during her early teens. Her natural love for music and her desire to worship God just seemed to go hand in hand – she used to listen very intently to Christian radio to pick out the most exciting new Christian music on the scene – she just couldn’t get enough of it!
The first song Sarah ever unleashed on the public was called ‘There is a Call’, and she used it as part of a time of worship at an event at church – people seemed to like it and at that point her hopes and ambitions to expand my songwriting started to grow at an even steadier rate. It was the result of an unbelievably random (or maybe not so random!) series of events that ended with Sarah sitting in the home studio of the friend of a friend one January Saturday, attempting her first recording endeavour... a five-track album called ‘The Weight of Your Glory’. It was really intended as an experiment to begin with – to get her stuff down on disc and see what happened. She had no idea what would happen in the few years to follow – all she knew was that she felt like she’d come home when she was worshipping God and this spurred her on all the more.
In the time since then things have continued to develop slowly but surely. Sarah ended up at University in Central London studying for a degree in music, and that in itself has opened all sorts of doors for her. Sarah hadn’t always intended to go to university, but God knew where He wanted her! During her first year Sarah was given the opportunity to take part in a singer-songwriter competition in a small London venue (the pub the room was underneath was called The Slaughtered Lamb – how fitting!), and she couldn’t have asked for a stranger experience... There she found herself in the very secular basement/acoustic lounge of a popular London pub full of non Christian music-enthusiasts, all eyes on her as she sang her heart out to God with themes of worship, salvation and devotion to God. The stark contrast between the things she was singing about and the worldly atmosphere of the venue was somewhat striking, as they don’t tend to naturally go hand in hand (!), and especially as this was her first real experience of performing publicly. But as it happened God really showed up that night and touched people, and she even won the audience prize!
At the end of 2007 Sarah found herself feeling incredibly frustrated at a lack of opportunities to perform – she had all these ideas and nowhere to let them out. Again randomly, she happened to be chatting to a good friend and mentioned to him her frustrations. He immediately offered Sarah the use of his equipment and producing know-how, and thus began an exciting 4 months of musical creativity! The end result was Sarah's second project, ‘More To This World’, which is fairly different in style to The Weight of Your Glory – perhaps showing a wider range of styles and themes.
Along with performance opportunities, Sarah's time at Uni has also allowed her the opportunity to lead worship at the Christian union. It has been an interesting journey so far, and she knows God has a lot more He wants to do there this year! She has also recently recorded a song that she wrote as a wedding present for some friends at church.
So what next? Well Sarah is continuing to develop her songwriting, and has a lot more songs in the pipeline! Watch this space for any new stuff coming your way...!
