They class themselves as "regressive rock" and play in a unique and characteristically diverse style. The band's line up currently consists of Joe Watson on guitars and Dan Kempster on drums.
The group was conceived in January 2007, largely by accident. The founding members, Joe Watson and Dan Kempster, initially set out to create a one-off rock opera/radio play called The Archive in late 2006. In January 2007, the decision was made to convert the project into a fully fledged rock opera. At this point the band was unnamed, and consisted of Watson on guitar and Kempster on vocals.
By the end of March 2007, The Archive had largely been converted from script to lyrics and required musical input. As the project continued to escalate, it was decided that the band would have to expand. Kempster relinquished vocal duties and took up position as the group's drummer. With a foundation of rhythm and melody established, The Archive began to take shape musically. Interestingly, it was around this time that the band adopted the name Self Diagnosis, previously a pseudonym for one of the pair's many previous projects.
In June 2007, with the vast majority of The Archive's content written and composed, the band welcomed James Ashwell as their permanent bass player. Over the next two months they refined the music of The Archive and prepared to record the project. A search for a singer brought Jimmy New into the band for the first recording sessions. Unfortunately, New was unable to permanently commit to Self Diagnosis and left in August 2007, shortly before most of the recording was due to take place.
Under ever-increasing pressure, Self Diagnosis abandoned The Archive in favour of a less-ambitious non-concept album. The rock opera's strongest tracks were recorded by the band as a three-piece, with Watson playing piano overdubs while both Kempster and Ashwell shared singing duties. The resulting album, entitled Remnants, was released on a small scale by the band at their debut gig at The Anchor pub in Tring on 8th September 2007. This was the first of a total of 8 gigs (as of 2009), the biggest of which was to 300 people at Battle of the Bands 07.
Almost immediately after Remnants' release, the band began work on new material for a second album, provisionally titled Undinal Songs. In October 2007, Tom Claybourn was brought into the band as the new lead vocalist. Merle Fitzpatrick also joined the band as permanent pianist in December 2007. Their spells with the band were, however, short-lived, leaving in March and April 2008 respectively. James Ashwell amicably parted ways with the band in 2009, the Undinal Songs project was abandoned, and Self Diagnosis went into a period of indefinite hiatus.
In early 2012, Kempster and Watson made the decision to reunite under the Self Diagnosis name with the hope of writing and recording new material for a concept album. While the album (currently known as Project 17) is still in its formative stages, the duo are hoping to write, record and release the album before the end of the calendar year.
