This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us
Sparks Lyrics

Zoo time, is she and you time?
The mammals are your favourite type, and you want her tonight
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You hear the thunder of stampeding rhinos, elephants and tacky tigers
This town ain't big enough for the both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave

Flying, domestic flying
And when the stewardess is near do not show any fear
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You are a khaki-coloured bombardier, it's Hiroshima that you're nearing
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave

Daily, except for Sunday
You dawdle in to the cafe where you meet her each day
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
As twenty cannibals have hold of you, they need their protein just like you do
This town ain't big enough for the both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave

Shower, another shower
You've got to look your best for her and be clean everywhere
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
The rain is pouring on the foreign town, the bullets cannot cut you down
This town ain't big enough for the both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave

Census, the latest census
There'll be more girls who live in town though not enough to go round
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You know that this town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us
This town isn't big enough, not big enough for both of us
I ain't gonna leave

There’s something special about Sparks. Something that can’t be explained properly. They and their music are so weird but in such brilliant way that drives you completely crazy. Love this band. Hugely underrated.

Dead Doll

@Bobby Clemente He ruled and wrote all the songs. Referring to Russell in an interview, Ron said "he's the fashion element of the duo", using the dry humour with underlying barbs that seems to define their interview interchanges.

Same! It gave me such a weird feeling, a combination of fear and fascination I think, but not sure I can put it into words. Excitement, maybe? Dunno. But it still has that effect, and I like it, so I can’t listen to it very often in case I get immune through familiarity. See you in three years or so!

An easy explanation for the Sparks' specialness is that Russel Mael sounds like a woman and has long hair and a slender body like a woman. Whereas his elder brother Ron Mael, who has short oiled hair and always wears a moustache, remains silent behind the keyboards with a sour face, like a mafioso. These contradictions in their behaviour and appearance always have been part of their show. I love their music too. Everything in this song sounds fresh and new. Russel Maels vocals, Ron Maels keyboard, the guitars, the percussion...

I just wish I could see this again for the first time. I saw this on totp when I was about 9. I have never forgotten it

Andrew McIntyre

Remind me of Talking Heads in a way, very accurate description sir!

Granulated

Ron Mael is massively underrated as a songwriter.

Chasbo Daniels

Yep, and he recites them aloud. He’s also read his lyrics to several Sparks songs… which are poetic in themselves.

Infinite loop

Do you listen to the poems he publishes every Sunday on YouTube? ;-)

Steve Rynne

Ron Mael is a genius
