Your Ex-Lover Is Dead
Stars Lyrics

"When there's nothing left to burn
You have to set yourself on fire"

God that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend of a friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour
Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
Tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in
Now you're outside me
You see all the beauty
Repent all your sin

It's nothing but time and a face that you lose
I chose to feel it and you couldn't choose
I'll write you a postcard
I'll send you the news
From a house down the road from real love

Live through this, and you won't look back
Live through this, and you won't look back
Live through this, and you won't look back

There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted
I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to say

I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

This was my boyfriend's favourite song. He fell and hit his head which lead to his death. I can hear his voice singing each lyric. When we all said our final goodbye, we played this song and I held onto his feet hoping he'd wake up when he heard 'live through this, and you won't look back...' we watched his final breath to this.

We were neighbours. We'd hope a fence to get to each other. The last time I saw him alive, we spent the night together, haha 'lazy lovins'. We sang 'Tribute' by Tenacious D while I got ready in the mirror together. I made breakfast and danced, he pulled me into his arms and told me to eat- knowing I was behind. I (ofc) was running late for my bus that morning. He unlocked his bike, tried to 'scare' me and proceeded to flag down that bus. I thanked and kissed him. He kissed me back and said 'I love you, and I'll catch you later kid' then gave me a love tap. I smiled and turned to him to savour that moment.

The bus driver called him a nice boy, and I smiled and thought back to my parents. That's how they met.

My mom was running late for school, my dad saw her then biked up to the bus and my mom got on... she fell for him in that moment and eventually crossed paths again.

I spent NYE in Montreal, I couldn't get this song out of my head. I wished he was with me whenever I looked up to Pont Champlain.

Our streets of parkdale, toronto are covered with ghosts. I never get to bike with him into heavy traffic or sit on his porch drinking a warm Turborg with a cigarette in hand. No one will ever get to hear his funny fuckin jokes.

So this song reminds me of a lot. I miss him every day. I look at his collection of books. They haunt me like the notes of this song.

Joshua Pamplin, I didn't get to love you long enough. I will always miss you and your profoundly poetic ways. Come visit me sometime? Please.

1. "I gave what I gave" - in this sense, the singer is talking about the effort(the love, time and energy) they put into the relationship. "I gave what I gave" is a very noncommittal sentence - the singer is literally just affirming that they put in effort into their past relationship.

usually, a lot of romantic songs have "I gave him everything" etc...this means love, affection, basically any type of effort you put into a relationship.

2. "reach deep" - in this case, it means to get very emotionally close to someone. the singer is saying that their ex tried to emotionally empathize with them, but failed("tried to reach deep but you couldn't get in")

3. "live through this, and you won't look back" - the singer is saying to live through the bad/painful moments you are currently experiencing. once you have overcome them, you will be happier. you won't feel the need to "look back", or to reminisce on them.

"you" is referring to the people listening to the song. this song is about meeting an ex, and people listen to it to get over their exes. the line "live through this..." is basically telling everyone listening to this song(who is getting over their ex) that they will be happy again.

again, the person living through this is the singer(who is talking about getting over an ex), or the people listening(who presumably are also getting over an ex).

4. "I chose to feel it" - "it" means the relationship. if we're going to be more specific, it means "the realization that the relationship has ended".

this line is weird. i think it has a lot of different interpretations, so i'll give you mine.

the previous line says "it's nothing but time and a face that you lose" - the singer is saying that once you break up with an ex, all you actually lose in your life is time(the time spent being in a relationship with an ex) and a face(the face of your ex).

the previous line implies that the singer thinks past relationships have little meaning(because they're comparing something as huge and complex as a relationship to a "time and a face").

so we know that the singer thinks relationships are worth little. "I chose to feel it" contradicts this statement - if something was worth little to you, you wouldn't care about it, right? the singer, in this line, is saying that they chose to "feel" the "it"(the relationship). they chose to mourn over it, despite saying earlier that the relationship means very little(and hence isn't worth getting emotional over).

anyways, i hope you find this reply useful. it's 5 months late, but maybe you'll see it. hopefully this helps other people out too.

I'm crying, this is so sad, so tragic, but so beautiful...Life can be so cruel in taking away what we love most. You remind me of Mitzi from The Cat Lady, one of my favourite games ever

@gripdamage man you work for the shattering dreams department?
We all change words in song same emotion sometimes cause we feel it that way according to the string the song touched we kinda put ourselves in it there's no copyright infringement if we sing along different, with all due respect, we just get dragged by feelings that merge with ours i too write to people and give cds with songs that have slightly variation to people i love like they hear it's different i wanna communicate something intimate for us in that song...after all it's real ok but if it came out and touched our strings and then came out of us this way.....at the end is a subjective reality, please don't get me started on reality ok we know the real one we jsut dream on the song and its emotion they gave us with something that belongs to us but alo like 'energetically connected' to the song that made us feel that way thinking a certain thing of our life, there's nothing wrong with it we're humans and spirit frankly don't care abt those things cause its free and merged with them musicians y know what i mean? Like honoring them with like 'you made me feel this it's so....like us' spirit is not separate maybe we got one sould that dissociate and fragment itself in many bodies to interact and know....itself its light side its shady side its dark side....still we are in the dark ages cause we can't stay at peace with our neighbours most....and....hence ourselves
Have a good day try to loosen up you're kinda stiff you'll feel better if others around you feels better with you....
