Formed in 1985, The Blivets were gifted with their name by bass player Mark Munzinger, who himself got it from Kurt Vonnegut. In Vonnegut's terminology a "blivet" is 10 pounds of s#*t in a five pound bag.
Along with Mr. Munzinger, the band featured Charlie Maxton and Shawn Nichols on guitar (with both serving as the group's primary songwriters) and Jamey Phillips on drums. As with most bands, the drum chair took on a frequent vacancy, filled by Michelle McGowan and Herb Hahn after Mr. Phillips departure before Britt Rosencutter took the most permanent residence on the skins. Other less-permanent members included Kit Craig on saxophone and keyboards and Bill Covington on vocals.
From 1985 until 1992, the Blivets scorched a trail through the Midwest band scene, performing intriguing and distinct original songs as well as a "kitchen-sink" approach to covers... everything from Burning For You to "Ye Sleeping Knights of Jesus." Although Wichita's Kirby's Beer Store served as their home base, the Blivets ranged far and wide; from opening for Alex Chilton, to setting up on the bowling lanes for the Blivets historic Live at Sky Bowl concert.
