The group consists of members with diverse musical backgrounds and experiences including sharing bills with the likes of Roger Waters, Frank Black and the Catholics, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Blonde Redhead, as well as appearances at the Grand Ole Opry. The music is affecting and sticks in your heart. Pre-released songs posted on the web have made new fans insistent for more and a demo the band made for their own practice use has been ‘illegally” (but flatteringly) copied and coveted by those eager to hear whatever they’re playing.
The Group was formed in 2002, when three friends (Joey Matthews, Brian Tharpe, and Chris McFarland) began searching together for a new approach to expressing their God-given musical passions. They formed the Church of Philadelphia, rehearsing and performing with friends and family, proving them to be a community-based band; a “community” known to have over fifteen members on more than one occasion! Out of this came the permanent addition of Sharla Mathews, Lindsey Crouse, and Aaron Tharpe, resulting in a fusion of original sound. Chris and Brian have developed strong song-writing skills and all the members regularly juggle instruments.
In 2005, the band set itself to a focused schedule in preparation for its first release. Six months later, the work was recorded in Portland, Oregon at Type Foundry Studio by Jason Powers & officially released on June 30, 2006.
