Poison & Wine
The Civil Wars Lyrics

You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Oh, your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine

Ooh, I don't love you, but I always will
Ooh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give the more I get back
Ooh, your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice, but I still choose you

Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
Oh, I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I don't love you, but I always will
I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will

Listening on 1/13/22.
Still touches me every time I listen, my perception of the story is unchanged. This is way past the desire, frustration, hurt - this is the point of agony. The heart wants what it wants, but depiction is clear: the line is palpable, but never crossed; the step-back is mutual; the bond is forever. Likewise the agony.

I’m still listening! 07/28/2022 Swoon….♥️

@Pat Bowman Welp, that hurt to read. And I hate that you are 100% correct 😭
- but yes your comment speaks nothing but truth. I wonder if they think about each other and what could have been from time to time...

SummerGirl

@Debbie Gillette Wrong. Your comment is hugely incorrect.

They fell in forbidden love. It’s obvious as their music progresses.💖

I will miss The Civil Wars forever. It’s so rare to hear two voices meshing SO perfectly. Just gorgeous, and perfect.

Chris Stapleton with his wife singing harmony comes close for a current fix.

"I don't have a choice, but I still choose you..." God, who doesn't know that feeling. So beautifully written. I come back to this song about twice a month. So tragic they aren't together to make magic like this anymore.
