Poison & Wine
The Civil Wars Lyrics

You only know what I want you to
I know everything you don't want me to
Oh your mouth is poison, your mouth is wine
You think your dreams are the same as mine
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you'd hold me when I turn my back
The less I give the more I get back
Oh your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don't have a choice but I'd still choose you

Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will
Oh I don't love you but I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will

Ok, am I the only one that doesn't see it as a breakup song/ballad? To me its more recognizing that there are hard times in a relationship, and when its hard to love them during the hard times, you still do. In the hard times saying "I dont love you, but I always will" that's how I interpreted it at least :)

I honestly almost want it to be my wedding song. Relationships are hard, it’s choosing that person every single day despite

Maybe I am speaking from a place of age, but these people were not in a romantic relationship and were married to other people whom they loved. If you identify with this song on a romantic love level -- fine! If it works for you, do it! In a long life, for me, I learned that there is limitless capacity for love of many types and there are limitless ways in which we can love other people that is not only romantic in nature. I believe men and women can love as FRIENDS drawn together for endless numbers of reasons other than romantic love -- whether it be an intense identification with a powerfully shared life experience or with an almost unspoken ability to communicate through music, through work, through understanding with just a glance or through connectedness, never spoken, but simply understood. From an all girl family, slightly afraid of boys as a kid and from whom I shied finding them to be unruly or boistrous, I avoided their roughness. As I aged, became educated, learned and worked VERY hard and closely with them, what were "scary" differences to me became a compliment of skills and abilities, as I worked closely with them for decades, almost exclusively with men, year after year. We made fantastic, intense work teams, the powers of which, our own partners never quite understood. Never was it about romantic bonding and we all loved each other, then we went home to our families. Love has few limits of any type.
