The Crainium were part of a small subset of bands in D.C. that never made it to Dischord that were heavily influenced by No Wave, free jazz, and bands like The Pop Group and Contortions. They only released a few 7"s and one full length but their small discography is impeccable.
The driving force behind the Crainium's music seemed to be singer Jim Loman's borderline psychotic obsession with gender roles and, specifically, that "mankind's survival is dependent on our transformation into androgynous beings."
