Heave Away
The Fables Lyrics

This world is either spinnin' way too fast or way too slow
And you gotta keep your head above confusion
Gotta get a job, guess it'll be Ontario
From the quiet bays to endless noise pollution
You're caught up in a brain drain
Can't live your life like a plain Jane
And you hear the ghetto war blastin' on the radio.
It's Yonge St. from Burkes Lane
Gotta put 'er up one more time before we go
And tear the House Down

Boys in boots and women with no shoes upon their feet
Time is flyin' 'til the early light
Tickin' tockin' now she's rockin'... dancin' in the street
Put your troubles out of mind and out of sight
But pocket change, nickel and dime
And common sense ain't worth the time
It's the same old, same old, wrapped in lily white
Let's shoot from the blueline
And put 'er up one more time tonight
We'll tear the house down
Tear the house down

So it's round up all the crowd
Loosen up the joint
Three sheets to the wind
Way up she's gonna go tonight
Dance your feet down to your knees
Wake up the girls next door.
Let's dance upon the roof
What odds about the kitchen floor
We'll tear the house down
Tear the house down

Come get your duds in order 'cause we're bound to cross the water
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
Come get your duds in order 'cause we're bound to leave tomorrow
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, sometimes we're bound for Spain
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
But now we're bound for old St. John's, where all the girls are dancing
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

I wrote my love a letter, I was on the Jenny Lind
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
I wrote my love a letter, and I signed it with a ring
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, sometimes we're bound for Spain
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
But now we're bound for old St. John's, where all the girls are dancing
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

So it's farewell, Nancy darling, 'cause 'tis now I'm gonna leave ya
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
You promised that you'd marry me, but how you did deceive me
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, more times we're bound for Spain
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
But now we're bound for old St. John's, where all the girls are dancing
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, sometimes we're bound for Spain
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
But now we're bound for old St. John's, where all the girls are dancing
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Sometimes we're bound for Liverpool, more times we're bound for Spain
Heave away, my jollies, heave away
But now we're bound for old St. John's, where all the girls are dancing
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away
Heave away, my jolly boys, we're all bound away

Love this song.

Drove from Michigan and just spent a week visiting Newfoundland for the first time. LOVED IT!

What a BEAUTIFUL place. And such good folks.

I was expecting there to be the Canadian accents like our good neighbors in Ontario have. I had no idea that Newfoundland is like another country altogether. Love the Irish accents.

I was also expecting to see a lot of Canadian flags like I see in northern Ontario. But I think I saw more Newfoundland flags than Canadian flags. Interesting.

@DaHam Sho You need a codfish too. And there's a bit more ritual to it. You can only be Screeched-In on Newfie soil and by a true Newfie, the best place is probably the Shed if you're not near a pub. (Which has its own, sacred rules in Newfoundland. The Shed is hallowed ground.)

We start by pouring you up a shot of Newfie Screech ask you where you're from, and you may get some gentle teasing about an accent or just being from that area, like being from Alberta or something.

Finally, leader of the Ceremony stands and asks:
"Are ye a Newfie, b'y?!"
And the reply to that is
"'Deed I is me old cock, and long may yer jib draw!!"
(That's Newfie for "yes I am, my old friend, and may your sails always catch wind".)

You take the shot, slap a kiss on the codfish, and boom, you're an honorary Newfie! :)

What a great song, and a great performance. Well done. Of course, since I recently lived four years in the Virgin Islands I am picturing a very different St. John, but this is beautiful scenery.
