One Thing Leads To Another
The Fixx Lyrics

The deception with tact, just what are you trying to say?
You've got a blank face, which irritates
Communicate, pull out your party piece
You see dimensions in two
State your case with black or white
But when one little cross leads to shots, grit your teeth
You run for cover so discreet, why don't they:

Do what they say, say what you mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong, I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another.

The impression that you sell
Passes in and out like a scent
But the long face that you see comes from living close
To your fears
If this is up then I'm up but you're running out of sight
You've seen your name on the walls
And when one little bump leads to shock miss a beat
You run for cover and there's heat, why don't they:

Do what they say, say what they mean
One thing leads to another
You told me something wrong, I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another
One thing leads to another

Then it's easy to believe
Somebody's been lying to me
But when the wrong word goes in the right ear
I know you've been lying to me
It's getting rough, off the cuff I've got to say enough's enough

Bigger the harder he falls
But when the wrong antidote is like a bulge on the throat
You runs for cover in the heat why don't they

Do what they say, say what they mean
One thing leads to another
You tell me something wrong, I know I listen too long
But then one thing leads to another
One thing leads to another
One thing leads to another

One thing (one thing) leads to another

This is one of those songs that never "go out of style", imo. Whose still listening to this awesome band today??

Jason Elliott

I just saw them in concert this past Thursday night.

This is compositionally just a "beat". The guitar loops the exact same part over and over again through out the entire song and in fact the lyrics are what make it so that it doesn't just get stale and makes it a "song". The riff would start driving you nuts if it was all by itself looping. I realized that people who passively listen to music and don't try to learn about it. Basicaly never know what they are saying when it comes to expressing their opinions about why they like or dislike music... The opinions are irrelivant. The frustration comes from not being able to actually pin point and define why it is "good". I prefer to just not try and don't listen to a song and immediately think: it's good because, of x, you, and z and why everyone should agree with me, but instead make objective conclusions about the actual composition. 1 riff songs are actually pretty rare, which is why I come back to this one. I can garantee you that If you took the lyrics out of this song and listened to it. you'd get bored and sick of the riff after the first couple of loops. It's the vocal part that does differrent things and keeps it from going stale. It's a property of music. You can easliy make a super catchy awesome riff, but then get stuck playing it for forever and it gets old without anything else happening, which is why most music is not like this and it's a huge hurdel to get over for most musicians to get to where they don't get stuck on playing a riff over and over again. This song is all about the lyrics and in fact, I only remembered this and had to look into it, because the lyrics always pop into my head randomly, but I could never hear any of the other music and after giving it an "active listen" I realized that it kind of sucks in every other aspect except the lyrics, which is why it's a pop song and I.only ever remember the "hook" and nothing else. Compositionally basic lyric centric music = pop music. Not "good" or "bad". A strong vocal part with weak instrumentation. In reality, everything is music. There is a spectrum and hierarchy in music, but you can only connect the dots by actually learning to comprehend what is happening in the music... Obviously most people just want to enjoy it. I'm just saying there are alot more to things under the hood going on in music then people realize. The worst thing you can do is get stuck chasing your tail about "good" and "bad". This kind of playing the same thing over and over again is actually very undesirable though. It's one of those going against the grain kind of things where the song is basically the exception to the rule that you can't loop a single guitar riff for 3min and then call it a song. I can garantee that this would not be "fun" to play, because it is blatantly "robotic". TBH, I don't think any one actually plays it and I think it is just a prerecorded loop repeating... 😆
