For those of you like me who were wondering what all of the lyrics were:

Oh say were you ever in Rio Grande?
Oh, you Rio!
It’s there that the river runs down golden sand
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

[Chorus:]
Then away, haul away!
Away, you Rio!
Sing fair-you-well, my pretty young girl!
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

Now New York town is no place for me
Oh, you Rio!
I’ll pack up my trunk and I’ll go off to sea
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

[Chorus]

Now all you beach-comers we’ll have ya t’know
Oh, you Rio!
We’re bound to the southern, and glad for to go
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

[Chorus]

So put down your bag and get it unpacked
Oh, you Rio!
The sooner we leave, the quicker we’re back
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

[Chorus]

The anchor is weighed and the gear all made fast
Oh, you Rio!
And the boys give a cheer when the harbor is passed
And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

[Chorus]

Why do they sing 'Rio' with a hard 'i' sound? Shouldn't it be a soft 'i' like 'Re-o'?

tony biddle

Because it is Rai-o

Ashley Grayston

At school we always sang it as Reeoh, which in my opinion sounds much better, but then again I'm not a musician😁

Duncan Adelaide

To be fair, my 5th grade music class in elementary School in Arizona sung it as "R-ee-o".

Thanks for your reply Colin.

Old pronunciation peculiar to English country singing; used in ballads and shanties, and (we think) in country churches, but not in everyady speech. Stan Hugill gives a further explanation in his 'Shanties and Sailors' Songs.'
