How to Save a Life
The Fray Lyrics

Step one, you say we need to talk
He walks, you say sit down, it's just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left, and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Let him know that you know best
'Cause after all, you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And I pray to God he hears you

And where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came

Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life
How to save a life

Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life

How to save a life:
1: talk to them.
2: ask them whats going on.
3: listen to them.
4: stay up all night with them.
5: don’t take them for granted.
6: check on them. The little things count.
7: don’t abandon them when the going gets tough.
8: don’t brush them off.
9: tell them you love them the little things count.
10: don’t call them attention seekers.
11: don’t not believe them.
If all fails. Don’t blame yourself…

I had a friend when I was 19. We used to go to clubbing together and then I would crash at his place because I lived way further out and there was no public transportation to my house at that time of night.

One week, his partner broke up with him and moved to England. No warning, no notice, no red flags, no nothing.
That weekend I went clubbing with my friend again, but I could tell that his heart wasn't in it and he was extremely depressed over the breakup.

The next morning, I gave him a big hug goodbye and told him that I loved him.

A month later, he told me that he had planned on killing himself that night, and the only thing that had stopped him was me telling him this.
So now I make sure to always let the people I love know that I love them, and show kindness to the people I don't know, because just knowing that someone cares and that there are good people in the world can literally save someone's life.

TURN TO GOD; REPENT OR PERISH, TURN FROM YOUR SIN OR YOU WILL GO TO THE LAKE OF FIRE, ALL SIN LEADS TO DEATH. READ BIBLE TO GET WISDOM, SEEK GOD.

@Valerie Knowles that’s not true

@Valerie Knowles That’s not true. This song was inspired by the singer’s experience when he signed up as a volunteer and mentor to an institution, where he met a kid going through a lot of shit including depression and the loss of his best-friend.

I’ve been listening this song since I was 13 yo, I’m still here.

Really nice comment

This is the best comment if you're worried about a friend or family member. If you suspect any intentions of self harm and or suicide. If you love and care for that person hold them even if they put up a fight, just hold them tightly and let them how much you love them and tell them how hurt you would be to lose them. Some people think no one cares or needs them so they think it's no worries. But tell them they're wrong and how much you need them and they matter so much. Just hug and love this person as long as you can. Sleep next to them if you have to.
I lost my mother to an overdose that I'm still not sure was intentional or not. A month before she died my dad died, and the pain was so bad for her. But I never thought she would do something like that. I wish I had moved her to my apartment and hugged her and been there for her for whatever she needed. She also drank. so it wasn't easy dealing with a drunk person that stayed awake at night and she would try to walk out the door at odd hours, or you had to watch and make sure she didn't drop her cigarette. It was like taking care of a toddler. But now that she's gone God how I wish I had done more. I was in a tremendous amount of grief as well from losing my Dad, but I wish I had done more, hugged her more, tell her how much she means to me.
So please if you're worried about someone and you think they are really depressed and they talking about the world would be better off without them or they saying things like they can't do this no more, that the pain of losing a loved one is the worst pain besides child birth. How losing my mom and dad was the worst things to ever happen to me. Tell them everything you can right now. You could help save a life
