Alabama has a reputation for being a few years behind the rest of the country. But, that's just fine with The Gentlemen Bastards. This dashing four piece from Huntsville are convinced that rock is headed in the wrong direction and they aim to set it right. Take a listen to their debut album and you'll hear ten powerful tracks full of old-school riffs and the swing and swagger that is missing from today's rock radio.
Canadian drummer Dave Stanley moved South for work and met guitarist Bill Barry when Stanley's band opened for Barry's alt-rock workhorse, Saturn5. Within a few months, Dave was a full-time member of S5 and together, they recorded two albums and logged countless hours onstage across the Southeast.
Following the demise of Saturn5, Bill and Dave continued down a heavier path, eventually meeting an engineering student and aspiring lead singer named Will Quinn. Will's quiet confidence and unparalleled vocal chops set him apart from other prospects. But, could he write? Any doubt was erased as he quickly composed the lyrics and melody to a Barry/Stanley jam that would become "If Only" on the Bastards' debut album.
The final piece of paydirt was Bödvar Bödvarsson - a jazz trained, lefty bass player from Reykyavik, Iceland who had just moved to Alabama with his American wife. Bödvar's intricate playing style was the perfect counterpart to the Bastards' busy beats and Sabbathy riffs. Upon hearing an emailed mp3 of Bödvar's audition jam with Bill and Dave, Will replied with an excited text - "Oh fuck yeah!" One listen to their self-titled debut and you'll be saying the same thing about The Gentlemen Bastards.
