Streets of Your Town
The Go-Betweens Lyrics

Round and round up and down
Through the streets of your town
Everyday I make my way
Through the streets of your town

Don't the sun look good today?
But the rain on its way
Watch the butcher shine his knives
And this town is full of battered wives.

Round and round up and down
Through the streets of your town
Everyday I make my way
Through the streets of your town

I ride your river under the bridge
I take your boat out to the reach
'Cause I love that engine roar
But I still don't know what I'm here for

Round and round up and down
Through the streets of your town
Everyday I make my way
Through the streets of your town

They shut it down
They closed it down
They shut it down
They pulled it down

Round and round up and down
Through the streets of your town
Everyday I make my way
Through the streets of your town

I remember laying awake at 3:00 am in about 1988 when I was listening to this song as a 16 year old and I just thought it was the best song ever. And how it just reminded me of my little agricultural town in California's San Joaquin Valley. That line: watch the butcher shine his knives and this town is full of battered wives. Just was like the town I lived in.:(

When a song connects it's magic. Cool story, bro.

Patrizio Tateo

So did you here it in the states or OZ?
Just wondering if it had any international success.

Marcus Ian McKenzie

love this. for some reason i only first heard it a year or so ago and i have been obsessed ever since. Right after I heard it I went to my girlfriend's tiny hometown in far north Queensland for a week or so and it resonated so powerfully with that place for me.

Brendan Richards

A true underrated classic.

"This town is filled with battered wives." What a very Go Betweens line to slip into a perfect pop song. Miss you Grant.

LizzieB Kennedy

So beautifully Australian.

Such an evocative song. Good film clip too – I like how they've incorporated bits of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne (and maybe others?).

marty gembitsky
