Formed by Bob Miranda, David Libert, Tom Giuliano, and Ralph DiVito, after they all graduated high school in Paterson, New Jersey, their major hits were "See You in September" (1966) (originally recorded by the Tempos in 1959) and a cover version of the George Gershwin/Ira Gershwin song, "I Got Rhythm" (1967), updated for the group's sunshine pop musical style. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, "See You In September" the song was listed in a memo containing 150 songs that radio conglomerate Clear Channel Communications recommended to be pulled from the airwaves - despite the fact that the song is about two lovers saying goodbye for the summer and had nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism.
The group had nine US Billboard Hot 100 Singles hits from 1966 to 1968. The band continues to perform with lead singer Bob Miranda as the only remaining original member.

While you're away, don't forget to write
Bye-bye, so long, farewell
Bye-bye, so long
See you in September
See you when the summer's through
Here we are (bye, baby, goodbye)
Saying goodbye at the station (bye, baby, goodbye)
Summer vacation (bye, baby bye, baby)
Is taking you away (bye, baby, goodbye)
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love?
(Counting the days 'til I'll be with you)
(Counting the hours and the minutes too)
Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Bye, baby, goodbye (bye-bye, so long)
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love?
(I'll be alone each and every night)
(While you're away, don't forget to write)
See you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
I hope that I'll see you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
Well, maybe I'll see you (bye-bye, so long, farewell)
In September
The Happenings's song 'See You in September' is a classic pop song about saying goodbye at the train station to a loved one who is leaving for a summer vacation. The song is set in the context of summer, with the worries of losing someone to a summer love. The singer is counting the days until they will be reunited in September. The song is structured around the simple but catchy chorus which repeats 'See you in September' and the harmonies of the four-part vocals.
The song is a wistful reminder of the fleeting nature of summer romances and the joy of reuniting with those you care about. The lyrics capture the mood of teenagers saying goodbye for the summer but wanting to stay in touch. The line 'there is danger in the summer moon above' signals the unpredictability of summer romance and the fear of losing someone you care about. The song's upbeat melody contrasts with the bittersweet lyrics reflecting the irony of parting when the sun is shining and the days are long.
