Broken Bones
The Holidays Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The fracture's set but it won't heal yet because there's certain things to say.
I'm nothing more than a bag of bones,
With a pair of shoes and an overcoat.
I'll elevate just to feel my toes
In a sunny place where you feel at home.
Just show me your broken bones, yeah you're fine
Just show me your broken bones and I'll show you mine.
I know damn well we're both alright
But I close my eyes everytime.
I'm nothing more than a bag of bones,
With a pair of shoes and an overcoat.
I'll elevate just to feel my toes
In a sunny place where you feel at home.
Just show me your broken bones, yeah you're fine
Just show me your broken bones and I'll show you mine.
Be happy with your broken bones,
And with my apocalyptic overtones
You'll be fine.
The lyrics of The Holidays' song Broken Bones are both hypnotizing and intriguing. The line "manipulate broken vertebrae, try and hold me in my shape" seems to depict someone trying to restrain or control the singer, to keep them in a certain form or mold. The following line "The fracture's set but it won't heal yet because there's certain things to say" implies that something needs to be said or expressed before the healing process can occur, but it's not being said. It's almost as if the singer is paralyzed or stuck in some way until this communication happens.
The lyrics "I'm nothing more than a bag of bones, with a pair of shoes and an overcoat" and "Just show me your broken bones, yeah you're fine, just show me your broken bones and I'll show you mine" could be interpreted in a few different ways. One possibility is that the singer feels alone, exposed, and vulnerable, but is embracing this state of being. They are accepting themselves and others for who they are, broken bones and all. The line "I'll elevate just to feel my toes in a sunny place where you feel at home" might imply that the singer is searching for a sense of comfort and belonging, perhaps through escapism or travel.
Overall, the song seems to be about accepting and embracing one's vulnerabilities, and finding comfort in the honesty and openness of others.
