The Impressions were an American music group from Chicago, Illinois, active from 1958 until 1983, whose repertoire included doo-wop, gospel, soul, and R&B.

The group was founded as The Roosters by Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and Arthur Brooks, who moved to Chicago, Illinois and added Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield to their lineup to become Jerry Butler & the Impressions. By 1962, Butler and the Brookses had departed, and after switching to ABC-Paramount Records, Mayfield, Gooden, and new Impression Fred Cash collectively became a top-selling soul act. Mayfield left the group for a solo career in 1970; Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson, Reggie Torian, and Nate Evans were among the replacements who joined Gooden and Cash before the group's demise in 1983.

Inductees into both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, The Impressions are best known for their 1960s string of hits, many of which were heavily influenced by gospel music and served as inspirational anthems for the Civil Rights Movement.

Rolling Stone magazine named "People Get Ready" the 24th greatest song of all time and also placed it at number 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks. The song was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. "People Get Ready" was named as one of the Top 10 Best Songs Of All Time by Mojo music magazine, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2015, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry due to its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance". Martin Luther King Jr. named the song the unofficial anthem of the Civil Rights Movement and often used the song to get people marching or to calm and comfort them.

I too have terminal cancer. The Doctors thought I might last about three months. That was more than four months ago. Now my faith is in the Lord not in Doctors. This song has pushed me further in the right direction to have faith in the Lord. Curtis told me to get ready. With both feet firmly on the ground, eyes streight ahead watching the tracks, and no baggage, I'm ready. Thanks for this posting, and I'm sure all of us who have a keen understanding of Mr. Mayfield's intent thank you as well.

I had colon cancer and almost died from it back in March of 2020 and I was positive through the whole deal and I pulled through . So that's what I'm saying is to stay positive and don't let no negativity come in the way because we the Lords chosen people and we have that power within us to stand strong . The problem is that we let this world and situations get a hold of us and we gotta quit robbing ourselves of strength . Our bodies react well to positive thoughts and that is a fact @
