Native Son
The Judybats Lyrics

Native son
What have you done
Where have you been
Who do you know
Where have you been
Who do you know?
CHORUS
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
Mainly devil-may-care
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
I'm still picking things
>From the air
Dizzy boy
Is there still joy
In being free
And in between
In being free
And in between?
CHORUS
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through this life
Nowhere

This song still sounds as fresh and cool and weird as it did 20 years ago.

If anyone wants to know what indie (although we called ourselves "alternative") college students looked like in 1989, this video is all you need to look at. I was there, I was one, and this is 100% it.

The truth about the 80's alt rock scene was that you didn't have to act a certain way or wear certain clothes to fit a specific narative. You could just enjoy the music.

The Mighty Cass the tuxedo jacket, leggings & birds nest hair were my jam! ❤️

I talked to Peggy once after a concert in 1991 and said I loved the part in the video (around 2:35) where she flips her glasses up and down. She actually blushed. It was the cutest thing ever. This song just brings back so many memories. Thanks for posting it!

I actually ran into my EE college advisor at a club called the Haunt in Ithaca (they've relocated since) at a Judybats concert. I barely knew the band's work--I only had one album (pain makes you beautiful) which I got just because they were coming to town and someone wanted me to go to the concert. But my advisor had been a fan for longer, loaned me the "Native Son"/"Down in the Shacks" albums. You know professors are cool when they're loaning you CDs. Also: he looked like Robert Plant. :-)
