The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

I was hoping someday
You'd be on your way to better things
It's not about your make-up
Or how you try to shape up
To these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams, honey
So now you pour your heart out
You're tellin' me you're far out
Not about to lie down for your cause
But you don't pull my strings
'Cause I'm a better man
Movin' onto better things
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
And at the show on Tuesday
She was in her mindset
Tempered furs and spangled boots
Looks are deceiving
Make me believe it
And these tiresome paper dreams
Paper dreams, honey, yeah
So won't you go far
Tell me you're a keeper
Not about to lie down for your cause
And you don't pull my strings
'Cause I'm a better man
Movin' onto better things
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
Yes, I wish that we never made it
Through all the summers
And kept them up instead of
Kickin' us back down to the suburbs
Yes, I wish that we never made it
Through all the summers
We kept them up instead of
Kickin' us back down to the suburbs
But, uh-oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because
She moves in her own way
But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show
Just to hear about my day
In The Kooks' song, "She Moves in Her Own Way," the singer takes us through his experience of falling in love with someone who is different from the rest. The lyrics, "she moves in her own way" express that the woman he is referring to does not conform to society's expectations of how she should behave or look. The opening lines of the song, "So at my show on Monday, I was hoping someday, you'd be on your way to better things," indicate that the singer has been hoping for her to come to his show, and that he sees her as someone who will go far in life.
The song's chorus, "But, uh-oh, oh, I love her because she moves in her own way, But, uh-oh, oh, she came to my show just to hear about my day," describes the singer's admiration for the woman's individuality and highlights how he appreciates the fact that she came to his show to listen to him despite not conforming to the norm.
The line, "Looks are deceiving, make me believe it," indicates that she does not fit the typical ideals of beauty but clashes against society's expectations with her unique style and personality. This can be suffocating and exhausting for her, and that is why she has turned to the singer for comfort, who is helping her celebrate her individuality.
Overall, "She Moves in Her Own Way" is a song about being true to oneself and standing out from the crowd despite societal pressure to conform. It's about finding someone who loves you for who you are, regardless of others' opinions.
