The band is the result of (now defunct) post hardcore band Asleep at the Scene, merging with solo artist Dan van Zuthpen of chalkandcheese - formerly Nice Guys Finish - in 2006.
The name of the group originated from a line in the song ‘A Letter’ by emo/indie band Mineral. Their sound is quite liberally referred to as ‘post-everything’ due to its distinctively hybrid style and vast influences such as Moneen, Mono and Planes Mistaken for Stars.
After the release of their first EP, An Introduction, The Paper And The Plane toured along the East Coast of Australia with Long Island band Brand New on their 2007 tour, including a MySpace secret show in their home town. They have since toured with From Autumn to Ashes, Closure In Moscow, Thrice, and played at the Taste of Chaos festival.
Mid-2008 their second EP release, A Year, Two Months, Sixteen Days & Counting was featured on National Australia Bank (nab) Community TV which is screened in their network of branches across Australia. This release was recorded by The Paper & The Plane and engineered by Ed Rose who has previously engineered albums by Emery, The Appleseed Cast, The Get Up Kids, and The Spill Canvas.
As of September 2009, only Greg Ibbotson remains from the band's founding lineup - originally playing bass, he has moved to guitar. Both founding guitarists, their vocalist and several drummers have left the band. In spite of this, The Paper & The Plane are currently working on a new album.
Current Members: Greg Ibbotson, Remy Boccalatte, Troels Thomasen
Former members: Scott Merillo, Steve Jacobson, Dan van Zutphen, Paul Voge
