The band released their self-titled first album in March 1995 via PopLlama Records. After they garnered massive acclaim, Columbia Records quickly signed them. The album peaked at number six on the Billboard 200 and has shipped over three million copies. The RIAA has certified it as triple platinum. Songs "Peaches", "Kitty", "Lump", and "Dune Buggy" received major airplay.
Their 1996 follow-up album, "II", did not reach the same acclaim, though it reached the top forty on the Billboard 2000. Single "Mach 5" also garnered some airplay. The band then fell of the radar for many listeners, dropped by their major label. However, their albums of the new millennium, 'Freaked Out and Small' followed by 'Love Everybody' and 'These Are the Good Times People' (released in 2000, 2004, and 2008, respectively), picked up positive critical reviews, such as from the All Music Guide. Although their touring schedule became more sporadic into the 00s and 10s, they continue to perform and satisfy audiences with their off-beat humor and catchy hooks.
Lump
The Presidents of the United States of America Lyrics

Totally emotionless except for her heart
Mud flowed up into lump's pajamas
She totally confused all the passing piranhas
She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead
Lump lingered last in line for brains
And the one she got was sorta rotten and insane
Small things so sad that birds could land
Is lump fast asleep or rockin' out with the band?
She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead
Lump was limp and lonely and needed a shove
Lump slipped on a kiss and tumbled into love
She spent her twenties between the sheets
And life limped along at sub-sonic speeds
She's lump, she's lump
She's in my head
She's lump, she's lump, she's lump
She might be dead
Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?
I think so
Is this lump outta my head?
The song "Lump" by The Presidents of the United States of America tells the story of a strange and emotionless creature named Lump who resides in a boggy marsh. The singer sings of Lump's confusing behavior as she encounters passing piranhas and wonders if she is asleep or "rockin' out with the band." Lump is portrayed as being different and out-of-place, with a rotten and insane brain that leaves her last in line for brains. Despite this, Lump finds love but spends her twenties seemingly wasting away in bed at sub-sonic speeds.
The lyrics suggest a sense of both fascination and unease with Lump, as the singer can't seem to get her out of his head but questions whether or not she might be dead. The final lines of the song show the singer questioning whether or not the lump is still in his head, perhaps suggesting that he's become obsessed with this strange and elusive creature.
Overall, "Lump" is a playful and enigmatic song that creates a vivid imagery of a bizarre world filled with odd characters and unpredictable behavior.
