Well what to say, we are a group of friends, from Oxfordshire, who ‘United’ in 2007 to make a band named, ‘The Release’. This group of friends consisted of four people Rory Salter, Jonathan Dane, Tom Worth and Calum Longshaw and after much (little) discussion we found a place for each of us in the band; Rory Salter would be Lead Vocalist and Rhythm Guitarist, Jonathan Dane would bang the Drum, Tom Worth would slap the Bass and Calum Longshaw would occasionally sing (Ouch) and Rip the Riffs out on Lead Guitar.
We went on to do the Usual, the school Battle of the Bands and so on, which, of what we can remember played a cover of ‘Kids’ by MGMT, We also then went on to open Emma’s Day, a local music festival, on the main stage. After this though a serious change was going to have to be put into action, due to a revelation (Some Bastards had the same name as us), A Name Change. So we discussed a lot, with names like ‘Gofer Broke’ cropping up along the way (What?). Then when are brains were aching and we felt the need to give in one of us perked up with; ‘The Rifts’ .So settled with this and we finally felt ready to Go For Broke (You See What we Did There) and started work on our first recordings and our first EP.
Then came the long awaited summer of 2009, with a couple a festivals to play in the coming months. First was Riverside Festival located in a small town called Charlbury in Oxfordshire. We were given a 30-minute set on the second stage and as it was our first show we were naturally bricking it. After this we went on to perform at Emma’s Day, in Chipping Norton at which we performed a similar set with some new material put in and an emotional cover at the end of ‘Run’ by Snow Patrol. With this momentum we had gained we went on to begin recording our first EP, to be titled Smile FM. Located in Taston (Jonny’s House) was our studio (Bedroom) and we were ready to get going In total the recording sessions probably took two days of solid work (Hmmm) and eventually we placed the work of art(?) on iTunes which was a very big achievement.
Still, to this day, not long after we started, are still at work and constantly conjuring up new ideas. Having recently played our first intimate gig at Stratford’s, Cox’s Yard are now (slowly) on the up and are producing songs such as ‘Intensive Apprehensive’ and ‘Story of Me’ (look out for those two). So Hopefully see you soon, at a gig, or festival or wherever we happen to be.
