Use Somebody
The Sing-Off Contestants Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been roaming around
Always looking down at all I see
Painted faces, fill the places I can't reach

You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody

Someone like you, and all you know, and how you speak
Countless lovers under cover of the street

You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you
Someone like you
Someone like you
Someone like you yeah

Off in the night, while you live it up, I'm off to sleep
Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat
I hope it's gonna make you notice
I hope it's gonna make you notice

Someone like me
Someone like me
Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you

I'm ready now
I'm ready now
I'm ready now
I'm ready now
I'm ready now
I'm ready now
I'm ready now

Someone like you
Someone like you, somebody
Someone like you
Someone like you, somebody

I've been roaming around,
Always looking down to all I see

Overall Meaning

Use Somebody by The Sing-Off Contestants is a beautiful song that talks about the longing for love and the feeling of being lost. The opening lyrics depict the feeling of being lost and trying to find one's place in the world. The singer of the song has been wandering around aimlessly, observing the world around them. They see "painted faces" and "filled places" that they cannot reach. This represents the feeling of being disconnected and the inability to connect with others.

They then express their desire for someone to fill the void in their life. They say "you know that I could use somebody," which shows their vulnerability and need for love. They want someone who knows them, someone they can share everything with, someone who understands how they speak and someone that they can have a meaningful relationship with. The line "countless lovers under cover of the street" shows how even though there are many people around, they still feel disconnected, making them feel the need for somebody.

The second verse talks about how the singer is putting in effort to make themselves noticed. They feel that they have something to offer, something that will make the other person notice them. They say that they are "waging wars" to shape themselves into the kind of person that will attract the other person's attention. This shows how love can make people go to great lengths to make themselves desirable. The ending of the song repeats the plea for someone like the person they admire, showing that nothing has changed, and they are still searching for that special someone.
