Johnson formed the first version of the band in 1979, with synth player Keith Laws. The group, after opening for Scritti Politti, issued its first single "Controversial Subject" on the 4AD label in 1980. One year later, it contributed a track to the Some Bizzare Records compilation album, Some Bizarre Album. In 1981 Johnson released Burning Blue Soul, which, despite the fact that it is technically a Matt Johnson solo album (and was released under his name) is often considered to be the first The The album. The album featured Johnson and various musicians from the British post-punk underground, including various members of Wire.
By 1982, The The had become Johnson's solo project, with a revolving lineup of musicians. That year, the album The Pornography of Despair was recorded, but not released. In 1983, the band released its first real album Soul Mining, which featured the single "This Is the Day," recorded with Orange Juice's Zeke Manyika, pianist Jools Holland and cult legend Thomas Leer. The band's next album, Infected, was a commentary on the state of modern urban life in Great Britain. The album was released in 1986, with Johnson joined by musicians like Neneh Cherry, Art of Noise's Anne Dudley, Marillion's Steve Hogarth, and Swans' Roli Mosimann, among others. It was accompanied by an album-length video and spawned The The's first UK hit single, "Heartland".
The The had a steady lineup again by the time its next album Mind Bomb was released in 1989, with Johnson joined by Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O'Connor and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist James Eller and former ABC drummer Dave Palmer. It spawned the moderate UK hit single, "The Beat(en) Generation". The same lineup remained for the next album Dusk released in 1993, which brought about three UK hit singles, "Love Is Stronger Than Death," "Slow Emotion Replay," and "Dogs of Lust," but changed for the 1995 album Hanky Panky, which was a covers collection honoring the music of country musician Hank Williams; it resulted in another UK hit single, "I Saw the Light". The band then consisted of Johnson, guitarist Eric Schermerhorn, keyboardist D.C. Collard, harmonica player Jim Fitting, and drummer Brian MacLeod. After Collard left, the album NakedSelf was released in 2000.

This Is The Day
The The Lyrics
Well you didn't wake up this morning 'cause you didn't go to bed
You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red
The calendar on your wall was ticking the days off
You've been reading some old letters
You smile and think how much you've changed
All the money in the world couldn't buy back those days
You pull back the curtain
And the sun burns into your eyes
You watch a plane flying
Across a clear blue sky
This is the day, your life will surely change
This is the day, when things fall into place
You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue

I think that this song is just sad. From the lyrics it seems to be about a very depressed person living in the past and because of this isn't moving forward with their life. "The calender on your wall is ticking the days off" it's not mentioning that the subject of the song is waiting for a particular day I think that the song is just illustrating that the days are going past with not much changing each day.
"But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories
That hold your life together, like glue"
I think this really shows how much the person is stuck in the past. The best days are behind them and the happiness that they gain from those memories is the only thing that keeps them going.
The chorus for me is the most depressing part. "This is the day your life will surely change" doesn't give me the impression of upbeat optimism, or a command over their life. There's no decision that they've made to change their life, the "surely" part of the lyrics says to me that they're hoping that some external force will change their life, but it never does and so they're doomed to repeat that hope everyday. Every chorus, every line that says "this is the day your life will surely change" is another day that passed where everything has stayed the same.
I think that the whole song is very depressing and tells us the story of someone who's life will never change because they're too busy thinking about the past and what could have been, "You could have done anything, if you wanted, And all your friends and family think that you're lucky". "This is the day" repeated ad infinitum for the rest of their life because it'll never change, because nothings going to come along and change it for them despite their desperate hopes.

I cannot believe it... I finally found this f**king song!
Ever since I was 5 years old, I’ve been trying to search this song... but I literally mean this, I’ve spent over 5.5 thousand days looking for this song. No f**king joke, i’ve spent every single day of my entire childhood and teenage years i’ve been trying to search for this tune. It sounds like i’m over exaggerating, but this is honesty something that has been pounding in the back of my head for over a decade.
Ironically, last month I heard this song played at a pizza shop, and tried to Shazam it, but it was too low to pick it up. Then it played a month later at a coffee roaster shop, and it was loud enough to pick it up on my phone, and I FINALLY FOUND!
My 15 years of searching for this song has finally come to an end, my stress is honestly, and literally no more! I kid you not, i’ve tried remaking the instrumentals, spent years looking up accordion like tunes just to find this song. I’m so relieve... that’s is honestly all I can say. Thank you :,)

I found it dad, the song that came on the radio the neighbor was listening to that time we were sitting on the front porch. I couldn't remember any lyrics until I heard it in a dream about you. It was the first time I felt a real connection with you and it was for some weird random song we accidentally heard. It was also the first time we had a beer together and the first time you put your arm around me and told me you were proud of me. It was all I ever wanted to hear my whole life. It was also the last time I talked to you in person and you were awake. I don't know if you know about me posting this or can read it but it feels good to say it. I miss you.

Great song to remember your dad!
