While Vile and Granduciel formed the backbone of the band, they had a number of accompanists early in the group's career, before finally settling on a lineup that added Charlie Hall as drummer/organist, Kyle Lloyd as drummer and Dave Hartley on bass. Granduciel had previously toured and recorded with The Capitol Years, and Vile has several solo albums. The group gave away its Barrel of Batteries EP for free early in 2008. Their debut LP for Secretly Canadian, Wagonwheel Blues, was released in 2008.
Reviewers of the band's music make note of its Americana overtones. The group's sound has been described as influenced by Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and My Bloody Valentine.
The lineup underwent several changes, and by the end of 2008, Kurt Vile, Charlie Hall, and Kyle Lloyd had all exited the group. Granduciel and Hartley were joined by drummer Mike Zanghi as the group slimmed to three members.
After Zanghi's exit in 2010, Steven Urgo took over drum duties and Robbie Bennett joined on keys.

The War on Drugs Lyrics
Come and see
Where I witness everything
On my knees
You beat it down to get to my soul
Against my will
Anyone could tell us you're coming
But baby, don't mind
Leave it on the line, leave it hanging on a rail
Come and ride away
It's easier to stick to the old
Surrounded by the night
Surrounded by the night, and you don't give in
But you abuse my faith
Losing every time but I don't know where
You're on my side again
So ride the heat wherever it goes
I'll be the one to care, woo
You're all I've got, wait
Don't wanna let the dark night cover my soul
Well, you can see it through the darkness coming my way
Well, we won't get lost inside it all again
Oh, my mind
No one sees me right here waiting
They don't mind, they don't hear, I can hear
Throw the big weight of your mind against it
I would keep you here, but I can't
Oh, I'm trying to see the right, the right way
I don't see it over there where I come from, babe, yeah
Yeah, woo
Lost on my sea again
The easy way to cover my sin
Don't want another dark time think to myself
I won't get lost inside it all, I'm on my way
Well I can see it in the darkness covering my mind
Well we can hear the voices war inside, yeah
They won't get lost inside it all
You're on my way, woo

They don't mind that I'm here, I hear
Throw the bad away, and your mind against it
I would keep you here, but I can't
Oh, I'll talk to you when I make my way back
I don't see it over there where I come from, yeah
Lost and you're hurt again
The easy way to cover my sin
Don't want another dark time to think to myself
We won't get lost inside it all, you're on my way
Well, I can see it in the darkness combing my mind
Well, we can hear the voices war inside
Yeah, and you won't get lost inside it all
You're on my way
beanke louwerse
Come and see
Where are we
This everything
On my knees
To beat it down
To get to my soul
I guessed my way
Anyone can tell it's you coming
But baby, don't mind
Leave it on a lie
Leave it your own way
Come and ride away
It's easier to stick to the earth
Surrounded by the night
Surrounded by the night
And you don't go home
But you abuse my faith
Losing every time but I don't know where
You're on my side again
So ride the key wherever it goes
I'll be the one, I can't, whoo!
You're all I've got to wait
You're running in the dark
When I come to my soul
Try and see it through the dark
It's coming my way
Well we won't get lost inside again babe
Am I right? no one sees you, anyone, around here waiting
They don't mind, they don't hear; I hear
For the best way-oh, you're mine, against it
I would keep you here, but I can't
Oh, I am trying to see the right, right way,
And I don't see it anywhere I go, yeah... woo!
She's on my side again
The easy way
I come to my soul
Walking in the downtown
Talk to my soul
They won't get lost inside again
On my way
I can see it the darkness coming my way
Well we're here
Don't get lost inside
Yeah you won't get lost inside at all
You're on my way
Woo!

This is a truly outstanding band and I am just finding out about them... I am 62 and I just haven't heard anything new that spoke to me with exception of Rival Sons and Greta Van Fleet in the last several years..... but this is a thinking band with cryptic lyrics... and that really sends me... I have listened to about 5 songs and like every one of them... I heard "Pain" playing as I went into the grocery store and shazamed it.... It is quite an unusual song to be used in a public playlist but I am glad it was playing....

Listen to the song Trains by Porcupine Trees. Consequently as a favor..could you explain the meaning of this song here for me?

It seems we in our 60's have pretty damn good taste in music. One of my favorite songs!!

61 here. tWOD is a great band with some amazing songs. Some of the others suggested below, too. But if you haven't yet heard them, check out The National. Thinking band indeed.

Imagine looking for "that one song" you heard but you couldn't remember any lyrics to it, nor how it really went but you knew it was a banger and you liked it and you just couldn't really ever recall it ... almost like it was part of a dream...
And then you find it....
Yeah. That was me just now.

I concur, Brother ❤️🧡💛💚💙. I live in OR in the spring & summer w/ my wife and kids. In the autumn & winter, I’m down in CA/AZ on…family and friends business. YET…😏…
…when I return to my beloved OR, for some yet unknown magical reason, this song is but one of many that hits me right between the eyes 👀 …as though Mother OR is saying, “you’ve been gone an awful long time, PJ…🤨❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥.

Exactly! I was thrilled to find out what this song was.
