American Girl
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Lyrics

Well she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin' that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, and if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Well, it was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it's so painful
Something that's so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Ooh
Ooh
Ooh
Oh yeah

Wednesday my dad died. This is one of the 3 songs that shape my childhood and my music taste formed by my father.

This song has always filled me with hope, with love and happiness because I think of my dad. My strongest memory is us sitting in the garage, tailgate down and blasting this loud as hell from the car on a summer night.

A year ago my dad and I watched a Tom Petty concert on PBS. My dad (always a crier) cried because "it's like we are at a concert together. I love that we have the same taste in music, I never thought I could share this with my children" he got me a Tom Petty shirt to remember the very normal evening of watching a concert together.

Wed always listen to tom petty radio. Maybe it was on the last car ride we took. I dont know.

I'm gutted. Im never gonna be the same person. But playing this song with my heart bleeding and my wounds of my soul raw, I know this song will let me do the one thing I pray for. Time travel. Go back in time to when my father was with me and feel his love again.

I love you dad. I hope you and Tom have met and hes teaching you guitar.

I can't listen to this without thinking of the Senator's daughter pounding the steering wheel and singing along in "The Silence of the Lambs."

I can't listen to this song without thinking of the opening day of school scene from "FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH".

I found a Tom Petty documentary on Netflix. Four hours long! Petty was a long-term, slow-motion hit machine. Had songs on the radio for 40 years, and none of them sound dated. Soundtrack of your life.

One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen!
