From the UK:
Initially an experiment with tapes, analogue synths and guitars, Tortus was formed in 1990 in Kingston, UK by Stephen Watkins (programming, bass) and Chris Ovenden (programming, guitar). The duo were soon joined by acoustician Peter Hanes, who introduced the pair to MIDI sequencing. The typical Tortus track, if there could be one, would consist of sequencing technology pushed to breaking point, alongside obscure guitar textures and plaintive vocals, with unexpected intrusions from Glee Club choirs or children's entertainers.
The outfit released several cassette albums with different vocalists, before settling on singer and flautist Lucy Gulland. They were later joined by Skree bassist Lewi Lewis. They bewildered audiences around London with their live shows, released an acclaimed 12" (Sand/Copper), then split up. Watkins went on to form Blowpipe with occasional Tortus trumpeter Andrew Blick.
From the US:
It all started in a small cottage in the backcountry of Weddington, North Carolina. Lifelong friends James Cobblestone (Stephen Efird) and Randall Richardbury (Trevor Leander) came together musically for the first time ever. Witnesses say it was the birth of modern day ghettotech. Energy, Talent, and a love for the music founded the band now known as Tortus.
Also from the US:
Tortus is a metal band from Paulding County, Georgia consisting of Bear Rowell, Lane Mitchell, John Sanford, Reed Karnes, Daniel Melton, Courtney Kiker, and formerly Alyssa Auchenpaugh.
From the US:
Tortus is the alias of 16 year old Ross Sharp. He creates indie music using garageband, a drum pad, and his guitars.
