Three young men with a natural inclination for singing, who long before had begun as members of other informal groups, which allowed them to gain musical experience and maturity. It was around 1966 in San Borja, a town in the Bolivian department of Beni, that they decided to form a vocal-instrumental trio: the accordion mastery and third voice of Hugo Daza, background guitar and second voice of Lorgio Dorado, musically frame the pleasant lead vocals of Walter Añez, who accompanies on guacharaca, an instrument that makes a rhythmic scraping sound. Together they create a new musical project which they name "Trío Oriental."
Walter Añez: born in Concepción, Ñuflo de Chávez province, Santa Cruz, 22 Feb., 1945
Lorgio Dorado: born in the same city, 7 Jan., 1948
Hugo Daza: from San Borja – Beni, 15 Aug., 1947
Initially, the trio's repertory was the music of eastern Bolivia: taquiraris, carnavales and chovenas, a few boleros and some dance music . By 1967, after appearing on Radio Mendez in the city of La Paz, they attend the 4th Annual Lauro Song Festival in the city of Cochabamba, appearing in the typical dress and straw hats of the "Oriente," playing a small accordion and a creole guitar, and winm first prize in the vocal-instrumental category. After this first triumph, they record an album along with the other contect winners. In1969, they refine their style adding an electric guitar, amplification for the accordion and a full rhythm section. Taking residence in the city of La Paz, they perform in various peñas, clubs, cultural centers, radio stations and participate in the first national television broadcasts. They step up their recording efforts, promoting themselves through tours of the principal cities and mining centers of Bolivia, to great success.
