We'll Meet Again
Vera Lynn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

Let's say goodbye with a smile, dear
Just for a while, dear, we must part
Don't let this parting upset you
I'll not forget you, sweetheart

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Till the blue skies chase
Those dark clouds far away

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

And I will just say hello
To the folks that you know
Tell them you won't be long
They'll be happy to know
That, as I saw you go
You were singing this song

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day

Overall Meaning

The song "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn represents the emotions and feelings of the soldiers who were fighting in World War II. It was released in 1939 before the war began. The song portrays a sense of optimism that despite the hard times the world was going through at that time, they would eventually see brighter days. The lyrics of the song are about two people who have to part ways, possibly for a long time, and about how they will meet again someday.

The song begins with the singer asking the person they're parting from to smile and not be upset. The singer assures the other person that they will not forget them. In the chorus, the singer repeats that they will meet again, but they don't know where or when they will do so. The singer encourages the other person to stay positive and keep smiling through the hardships. The song puts the focus on the idea that they will meet again on a "sunny day," which represents hope in dark times.

The verses of the song talk about the person who is leaving and the singer's promise to say hello to the people the person knows. The singer wants the people the person is leaving behind to be happy to know that they were singing this song when they left. In this way, the song takes on a bittersweet tone as it acknowledges the pain of parting but also hopes for a reunion in the future.

Overall, the song "We'll Meet Again" is a powerful reminder of the emotional toll of war and the hope that carries people through difficult times.

This was put into my recommended again today.

My grandpa passed away two days ago from a heart attack. He had been developing more health problems since 2019 and had a heart attack before and was sent home with just 2 weeks left to live.

But not my grandpa, he was a fighter, and he lasted 3 more years. And he passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Although he had had a heart attack we were told it was the most peaceful way he could've gone, it was like he went to sleep. No pain, no more suffering, no more fighting.

He was an amazing man, he loved Jazz and was a professional Jazz musician for most of his life. Going professional at age 16 and being able to travel all over the world, meet amazing people, do multiple movies and TV shows, and support his family doing what he loved.

I never really had a father figure growing up and I lived with my grandparents so he was that figure for me, which made this loss so much harder for me. But I made sure to be there to take care of him in his last days, no matter how scared, stressed, and tired I was.

He fought for all of us and continued to do so until his very last breath, so it was time for us to fight for him too.

I love you, Grandpa. We'll meet again. <3

And to you, random stranger on the internet: thank you. For taking the time to read this and learn a little bit about my grandfather's story. I've always seen comments like mine over the years but never imagined the day I would be writing one myself.
Go make sure to tell your loved ones you loved them.

Last thing, my grandpa had a wide variety of music in his collection, some solo pieces, records, tapes, you name it.

I've made a YouTube channel for him to continue his legacy, if you'd like to check it out feel free to do so. As of writing this there isnt anything on it but there should be very soon.

Lyrics

We'll meet again
Don't know h-where
Don't know h-when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away

So will you please say hello
To the folks that I know
Tell them: "I won't be long"
They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
I was singing this song:

We'll meet again
Don't know h-where
Don't know h-when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

(with company)
We'll meet again
Don't know h-where
Don't know h-when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day

Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies chase those dark clouds far away

So will you please say hello
To the folks that I know
Tell them: "I won't be long"
They'll be happy to know
That as you saw me go
I was singing this song:

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some su-nny day

In terms of family members surviving bombings during WW2 I have some stories of my own.

I come from the axis side of the war.
I’m Japanese.
English is a surprisingly easy language to learn 😂

My grandfather was born in Osaka 1935, or was it 37 haha, I forget.
He was in elementary, or 小学校when the war began.

Many family members were sent off to fight the war waged by the top brass of japan.
My grandfather, of course, was too young to fight.

To make a long story short, he lived through the beginning of the allied bombings of japan.

Since Osaka was, and still is, a major city in japan the bombings were very intense here where I live in Osaka.

He told me this only once.
The first time he went through a fire bombing, he said, that the smell is something you don’t forget.
The town he remembered was turnt to a smoldering mess.
Bodies everywhere. He said you couldn’t even tell if they were a human prior to being torched, let alone what gender they were.

His home was destroyed also.
His family, or what was left of it because his uncle was a fighter pilot, two other relatives, one 18 and another 23 whom both died as infantrymen, had hid in a air raid shelter, or 防空壕、so they survived.

My great grandfather was too short to be conscripted.
Lucky him I guess 😅

Soon after my grandfather was sent off to the countryside to escape the bombings.

After the war had ended he returned to Osaka.
His mother and father survived the war, but his father died soon after the war when he was 16.

His mother somehow managed to run the produce shop they ran as a single woman in the era where most women in any country barely had any independence whatsoever.

Truly a woman harder than iron.
She lived a long life, but died before I could meet her as I was not born yet.

Moving on to another story, my great uncle, or my grandfather’s uncle, was a fighter pilot.

He piloted a Ki-43 III “Hayabusa”
He flew it over the mainland Japanese islands.

I haven’t heard many stories of him, but one thing I do know is that he was a Kamikaze pilot towards the very end of the war.
Luckily he survived the war simply because the war ended before it was his time to take off for the final time.

Apparently he felt immense guilt for not being able to die for his country and protect his family while his comrades were able to fulfill their duties.

He died two decades before I was born so I never got to meet him either.
There’s a picture of him standing before his aircraft on an airfield in my grandfathers home.

The other two men whom fought in my family I know next to nothing about.
I only know they existed to begin with because I visited my family’s grave in Hyogo prefecture many years ago.

I asked my grandfather whom they were and he explained.

He told me the 18 year old one died in China and the other one died in south east Asia.

How he knows that I don’t know.
The fact is though is that they died real young.
Too damn young.

War truly is hell.
But because of my ancestors I get to live the cushy life of the modern Japan today.

And I’m grateful for that.
But one thing I don’t like about my country is the lack of respect I see for our predecessors.

I learnt of the atrocities committed by my countrymen.
Hell, I studied it myself.

But due to those past crimes it’s taboo to respect our predecessors even after all they have for us.

And I hate that.
I absolutely hate that
For some damn reason you’ll be seen as a far right extremist for showing your love for japan and respecting the past fallen for our modern country.

But hey, who gives a shit in the end 😂

Last bit to add here, a great friend of mine’s grandmother was in Hiroshima on August 6th 1945.

She was luckily very far away from Kure harbor. She was a toddler whom had crossed from Korea to japan, and what timing Ey? 🤣

She was irradiated but survived.
Fun fact, if you were irradiated by the atomic bomb during the final days of the war you get free medical care for any sickness in any hospital in the entirety of japan for life.

Another person I know, A guy named Toyohara, 豊原、had a family member whom was also a kamikaze pilot.
If I recall correctly it was his grandmothers brother.
Sadly he didn’t survive the war.
He said that his grandma’s older brother crashed his plane into a ship and died.
If he sunk it or not I don’t know.

Another man that I met years back’s older relatives ran from the Soviets in Manchuria as the war was about to end.

Apparently the Soviets were immensely feared.

That’s about it for the stories I have for now.
If you actually read this far and want to know more about some war stories, let men know.

My father knew a Jewish lawyer (of course he’s a lawyer 🤣) who’s grandfather was in a concentration camp.

He showed me his tattooed arm with the numbers, although very faded, a few years before he died.
I was real young then but I remember that clearly.
