The band members attended University of Michigan's music school. They first came together as a rhythm section for a performance at the Duderstadt Center, a university facility that houses an arts library and other resources. After reading an interview with German producer Reinhold Mack, band founder Jack Stratton conceived of Vulfpeck as an imagined German version of the U.S. session musicians of the 1960s such as the Funk Brothers, the Wrecking Crew, and Muscle Shoals. The idea was to channel that era of the live rhythm section.
The band's founding members are Jack Stratton on keyboards, drums and guitar, Theo Katzman on guitar, drums and vocals, Woody Goss on keyboards, and Joe Dart on bass. Touring partners and frequent collaborators include Antwaun Stanley, Joey Dosik and Cory Wong. Other contributing musicians include Charles Jones, Christine Hucal, David T. Walker, Bernard Purdie, James Gadson and Blake Mills.

That it's taken me all this time to say girl
I'm slow
So it's taken me all this time to say girl
Tip toe
And I want to acknowledge my mistake girl
Uh oh
And I hope that you know it's not too late
Put it in my pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my back pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my pocket
In my back pocket
Oh oh oh
And I'll
Put it in my pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my back pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my pocket
In my back pocket
And I'll read it when I'm alone
Do you like me? Circle yes or no
On this piece of paper
'Cause I really really need to know
Are you gonna be my fifth grade queen?
Hand it back after second hour
Then I will know if you're gonna be my special flower
Ooh girl, 'cause I need to know
I will
Put it in my pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my back pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my pocket
In my back pocket
Oh oh oh
And I'll
Put it in my pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my back pocket
Put it in my pocket
In my pocket
In my back pocket
And I'll read it when I'm alone
When you kissed me on the playground
I lost my breath, I had to lay down
And assess what I had seen
Then I had to write the words out
'Cause you took them out of my mouth
But it's hard for me to read
Out loud
Oh gee
Oh gosh
I know
That it's taken me all this time to say, girl
I'm slow
So it's taken me all this time to say, girl
Tip toe
And I want to acknowledge my mistake, girl
Uh oh
And I hope that you know it's not too late, girl
I know
That it's taken me all this time to say, girl
I'm slow
So it's taken me all this time to say, girl
Tip toe
And I want to acknowledge my mistake, girl
Uh oh
And I hope that you know it's not too late
In the song "Back Pocket," the singer is expressing his regret over not communicating his feelings earlier to a girl he likes. The lyrics suggest that he has had a crush on her for a while, but has been too slow to act on his feelings. The chorus "Put it in my pocket, in my back pocket" represents his desire to save his feelings for her and treasure them. He asks her if she likes him in a childish way, reminiscing about the old days when asking someone out was as simple as passing a note that says "Do you like me? Circle yes or no." The lyrics suggest that he has been holding onto his feelings for a while, and finally wants to acknowledge his mistake of not communicating earlier.
