Their music is most closely matched to a marriage of Rage Against The Machine and The Red Hot Chili Peppers but also shows influences of the experimental classic rock era as well as the progressive 90’s nu-metal and alt. rock era. The way that W.O.F. combines influences into one genre songs and also meshes multiple genres into the same song really shows how true they are to their desire to stand out from the crowd, as well as shows their musical tastes and creative song writing abilities. The trio resides in Madison, WI and consists of bassist Lennon Baker, drummer Cal Lamore, and front man Joe Marsden pulling double duty on vocals and guitar. And yet even with only three members they still manage to create a more powerful sound than some five-piece bands. “Don't pass up a chance to see Wall of Funk live,” raves Kat Kosiec, writer for Dane 101, “especially if you like to head-bang or shake your butt at a concert.”
Wall Of Funk is currently very close to finishing their newest release, Sometimes Life, a four-song EP focused on instrumental intricacies and vocal melodies. The album still captures W.O.F.’s raw funk-metal side that they’re known for, but it also does a take on their more intimate blues-rock side too. “This EP is the perfect result for where we are now and the perfect segue to where we are going,” states front man Joe Marsden. “We’ve gone through a lot of growth since we first started and we’re still finding who we are as musicians and artists, coincidentally, we feel that not only the album title but also the music we’ve created on this EP really capture that essence.” A notable fact about W.O.F.’s EP to be released August of 2012 is that all of the songs were written about 8 years ago during Joe and Lennon’s teenage years and have been revised and revamped since then. Sometimes Life promises to please your more moody and philosophical side with its dynamic and spacey blues-metal feel.
W.O.F. started out with an EP titled Hot Insight recorded by vocalist/guitarist Joe while he was attending Madison Media Institute. Lennon of course played bass, and Joe still played guiar and sang, but also played drums and percussion on the album as the new project lacked a dedicated drummer. So, with their desire to play their newly tracked songs live, in stepped drummer Cal Lamore in 2008. “We’ve all known each other since we were about 10 years old, and actually had previously all played together in a different band with similar roles, so after hearing Joe’s project I was immediately compelled to play drums with him and Lennon,” says Cal. Having just started playing the drums Cal really found and built his style through the formation of Wall of Funk.
Shortly after fully forming the group and getting some live gigs under their belts, W.O.F. set out to record a full length CD, Vital Hiatus, which was released in July of 2010 with a very positive response from the local press and their dedicated fans. “The guitar improvisation on ‘Wandering Out’ provides a dreamy, psychedelic feel,” says Rich Albertoni, writer for Madison’s Isthmus. “The acoustic riff that opens ‘Hiatus’ builds into a slow groove that takes flight with a skillful wail of electric guitar.” Shortly after it’s release Vital Hiatus was also nominated for Unique Album of the Year by the Madison Area Music Awards.
During the creative times of Vital Hiatus Wall Of Funk also managed to release an electro funk rock cover of U2’s Bullet the Blue Sky that was featured on 105.5 Triple M’s Joshua Tree Sessions local artist compilation. In the fall of 2010 Wall Of Funk was asked to be part of a Madison Area Christmas Compilation Album, M.A.X-Mas, and chose to make a funk metal cover of Rocking Around the Christmas Tree and also wrote an original funk metal song based on Futurama’s Christmas episodes accordingly titled “Robot Santa”. They were even asked to do a follow up to that with M.A.X.-Mas Volume 2 in 2011 and were excited to cover Jingle Bell Rock as well as create their new favorite single “Gravity,” this time with a more funk rock style. M.A.X.-Mas Vol. 2 is also currently up for a M.A.M.A’s nomination in several categories. And for their boldest venture yet, at Max Ink’s Halloween Party 2011, W.O.F. did a spoof cover show of one of their favorite bands, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with a packed club and a wild response from the locals!
For the future Wall Of Funk plans to expand not only their musical horizons with beginning writing for a new full length CD, but their concert venue horizons as well, looking to travel to the greater mid-west area, determined to promote their new EP and grow their fan base by building one real musical relationship at a time. W.O.F. states, “We really want to make people feel what we do when we play our music, and we’re confident that the energy and musical emotion we’ve put into our current project Sometimes Life will do just that.”
