She was born in Paris in 1978 to Jewish-Tunisian parents. At the age of four, she moved with her family to Ramat HaSharon, Israel, where she learned Hebrew and trained as a pianist. She served in the Israel Defence Forces as a soloist in the Israeli Air Force Orchestra. She began her singing career with a part in the musical "Les Dix Commandements," and her first solo album, In A Man's Womb, was released in 2001. According to a Songfacts interview with her, it disappointed Yael, who decided she would be much happier giving up her dreams of stardom and making music on her terms.
She also sang the song "You Disappear" by Bruno Coulais for the film Harrison's Flowers directed by Elie Chouraqui. For her early work she was credited simply as Yaël.
Naïm joined forces with percussionist David Donatien, and over a period of two years they arranged and recorded thirteen of Naïm's songs in a studio in Naïm's own appartment in Paris, and these were released as her second album, Yael Naim, in the fall of 2007 on the Tôt Ou Tard label. The songs are in French, English, and Hebrew and received critical acclaim, and the album entered the French album chart at #11 the week after its release. The style has been described as having a touch of folk and a touch of jazz, with mysterious and evocative words sung with a delicate and intentionally slightly husky voice.
In January 2008, her song "New Soul" was featured in the debut commercial for the MacBook Air laptop. The song gained fame from being featured in the ad, and it has peaked, as of February 1 2008, at #2 on the iTunes Top 100 Downloaded Songs.

I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here
Felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
See I'm a young soul
In this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate?
Try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Ooh
This is a happy end
'Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong?
This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away
I'm a new soul (this is a happy end)
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here (this is a happy end)
Felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake
I'm a new soul (la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
(La-la-la-la-la-la)
In this very strange world (la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la)
Making every possible mistake (la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
(La-la-la-la-la-la)
Possible mistake (la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la)
Every possible mistakes (la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes (la-la-la-la-la-la)
Mistakes, mistakes, more mistakes (la-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la)
Mistakes (la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la)
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes, mistakes (la-la-la-la-la-la)
(La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la)
Take a mistake, take, take a mistake
Take, take a mistake, take
The song "New Soul" by Yael Naim is a beautiful representation of the struggles of someone who is new to this world, trying to learn about the art of giving and taking. The lyrics speak to a young soul that was hoping to gain knowledge about what is true and what is fake; however, they encounter hate instead of love, and communication becomes a challenge. The combination of the protagonist's youthful innocence and the world's cynicism creates a tragic, yet hopeful, tone.
The chorus of the song, which is repeated several times throughout the lyrics, is an ode to the mistakes that it's easy to make as a new soul in this world. Despite these mistakes, the singer finds joy and fear in the experiences that they encounter in their journey. The verse "this is a happy end, come and give me your hand, I'll take you far away" signals that the protagonist has found someone they can trust and who will lead them to a better place. It highlights the importance of connectedness with others in a strange and confusing world.
Overall, "New Soul" is a beautiful commentary on the struggles we all face in life. It's a reminder that communication, trust, and love are not always easy to come by, but they're worth pursuing.

For all of you who don’t understand why we feel nostalgic, this song wasn’t released 5 years ago. It was released way back in Yael’s 2007 “Yael Naim” album. Which makes this song almost 14 years ago today.
