Matthew "Gar" Bailey, aka alGARhythm, was born Nov, 16 1975 in Orlando, FL. A self proclaimed, "Neo-Dada Maximalist" and "Shamanic Fig as an Embodiment of Sound". Perhaps due partly to Gar's history as a visual artist, "alGARhythm" works in an area of live analog electronics, sound collage, and effectual processing that borders on performance art as much as it resembles experimental IDM or leftfield electronic music.
Also an accomplished visual artist. Abstract painting and mixed media assemblage go hand in hand with Drum Machine Art i.e. analoGARhythm echo box channel changing, spine tickling arpeggiation, and fingertip-tap-dance melody machine-isms. -Synchronized like moonlit tidal pools run through midi cord nervous systems.
Possible musical descriptions: -Art Brut Beat Collage, Neo DaDa MuzaK, Knob Box Cornucopia of Continuous Fluxuation. (Descriptions remain open to interpretation.)
alGARhythm works with an assortment of live instruments, as well as with machines. -Synthesizers, Rhythm & Melody making machines, Samplers, Mass Effects, Midi, Vocalization, Found Sound, Field Recording, Vinyl, Tape, TV/Radio, Guitar, Live Percussion, and the list goes on. Perhaps do to his history growing up in postrock and postpunk scenes of central FL , he prefers to "w3rk" with hardware over software, real time sound manipulation, and limited sequencing. Gar expresses overbearing social ironies and underlying beauty though the juxtaposition of sound, and the contrast of auditory concepts. Building untold layers with the synchronization of midi, and a vast variety of sampling from the audio detritus of a modern society. Such as: TV's, CB's, records, tapes, radio frequencies, nature, people. alGARhythm exhibits a genuine interest in the human experience, and how to reflect that with his music and sound collage.
GaR's first substantial music project before alGARhythm, was a 2-man project of psychedelic, post-rock with elements of ambient/electronics and comedic sound-collage. This group was called: Zoltan Dobi. A band with guitarist Adrian Taylor that lasted from roughly 1998 - 2005. In 2005, the completely zany, yet ultra serene, -“Cooter Beek Invades Foreign Occupations” finally came into fruition. In the form of a limited edition pressing of 100 CDs. The album was later released digitally in MP3 format on Polyvibe Records in the Spring of 2007.
alGARhythm's first solo release was the original lo-fi, bedroom IDM album: - "the South Pole on Fire", and was self released online in late 2003. By 2005-06, alGARhythm had delved headlong into recording his own new “experiments” in organized sound and was picking up interest from an independent Orlando, FL upstart called, Polyvibe Records. Many of his 2005/2006 recordings would become the basis of his 2nd solo album released on Polyvibe in January of 2007. alGARhythm's - "Reinventing the Orange" dropped to a mostly positive listener and critical response. While 2007 and most 2008 were spent promoting the album and playing shows in support of it. Mr. Bailey also started a promotional group called, "Avant GARism". For putting on shows in the Central FL area, and to give himself and other up and coming underground musicians opportunities on the stage as well.
In August 0f 2008. alGARhythm Bailey started his own independent net label called: Hairy Sloth Records. Which offers listeners digital versions of much of it's music for free. He has reportedly recorded a 3rd solo LP in 2010 which has yet to see light on HSR. He's also said to be rehearsing a new stage presentation and performance which will include many of the visual and auditory elements which has helped make Gar Bailey aka alGARhythm such a well rounded artist and musician.
