Krovo's style changes with each release, but constants include an emphasis on creating new rhythms and textures, a heavy use of phase- and frequency-modulation synthesis, and a balance between composition and improvisation.
Krovo's music has a wide range which can be only partially described by rigid genres or standard electronic music ideas. One of the main goals of the project is to create a unique sound that can stand on its own, free of musical clichés. Complete success is impossible of course, but it's still fun to try.
Some of Krovo's influences include punk music like DNA, glitch artists such as Ryoji Ikeda, electroacoustic improv groups like AMM, electronic musicians like Autechre, as well as many other artists who have paved their own path rather than following the worn-out trails: SND, Muslimgauze, Burning Star Core, Skinny Puppy, Black Dice, DJ QBert, La Peste, and many others. Krovo also takes influence from its independent peers such as artists like Razxca, MushroomWavved Collar, That Horrible Red Ruler, YAWE6Gletshn, DJ Funny Powers, stAllio!, live coding pioneers such as slub, nebogeo, and yaxu, and most (if not all) of the artists who have contributed to the Glitch City netlabel.
Philosophically, Krovo is heavily influenced by ideas that expand the definition of music, such as musique concrete, synaesthesia, sonification, and others. The season of autumn, scientific concepts such as physics and evolution, the unintentional jazz of video game sound effects, visual imagery, and ideas from software have also played a role in the musical development of the project.
The sounds are produced in a variety of ways - usually digitally but not always on computers. Software-wise, FL Studio and MilkyTracker have been used, but nowadays the primary tools are LMMS, Audacity (for recording as well as actual production of sounds), Pure Data, SuperCollider, and various other smaller tools and toys. On the hardware side, a Roland SP-404 and Korg Mini-KP have been part of the kit, but the current setup consists of an Alesis Micron, a Korg Mini-KP 2, a Teenage Engineering OP-1, a laptop, among other instruments and noisemakers.
Although many of these tools come with presets, many of the current preferences are chosen because of their openness and creative potential: Audacity, Pure Data, and SuperCollider allow for effects, synthesizers, and sequencers to be written entirely from scratch, unbound by standard templates or workflows tailored to conventional electronic music.
Krovo has released four albums and seven EPs thus far:
Skk - debut album, psychedelic rhythmic noise.
Noiser - first EP, harsher, more abstract sounds.
Find - second EP, much more conventional rhythmic electronica.
Senkyder - second album, dense rhythmic noise and poppier tunes.
Oktrans - third EP, autumn-inspired textures and melodies.
Diskyder - fourth EP, dark ominous remixes of Senkyder tracks.
Axis - fifth EP, sometimes glitchy, always evolving.
Xyko - third album, composed 100% of phase- and frequency-modulation glitches.
Null - sixth EP, spacey and atmospheric with bits of rhythm.
Messer: One Thousand Golden Knives Ripping Holes in the Fabric of Reality - fourth album, abstract & rhythmic exploration of structures. glitch, noise, eai, 4 years in the making.
krxl/Qbd - split release of micro and cyberfunk with DJ Funny Powers.
Current in-progress works include an album of unrelated improv sessions edited together, as well as many other releases, whose style will continue to push Krovo's boundaries. In the past, collaborations have included works with Orangy/Jeri and Mathew Pelton. Krovo has remixed MKDELTA and Cripple Clerk (and is open to providing more remixes if requested).
Krovo first released music on modula t. worm's own label, K-PDT, but more recently with Glitch City and Dramacore. Future works are planned for release with Чёрный квадрат (Black Square) and other netlabels who might be interested.
Krovo has an official website on struct.ws, as well as a twitter and a facebook page. There is also a Bandcamp.
