I'm Not in Love
10cc Lyrics

So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because
I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
I like to see you
But then again
That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you
Don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
'Be quiet, big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
Big boys don't cry
I keep your picture
Upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that's lying there
So don't you ask me
To give it back
I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time
Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time
I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made, ooh
I'm not in love
I'm not in love
The lyrics of 10cc's song "I'm Not In Love" speak of a man's reluctance to fall in love. He repeatedly asserts that he is not in love and that his actions towards the woman in question are merely a phase he's going through. He calls her and likes to see her but doesn't want her to think that he has feelings for her. He wants to keep their interactions low-key and not the subject of gossip among their friends. He even keeps her picture on his wall but only to hide a stain. The song concludes with a statement that he is not in love and that she should not think otherwise.
However, the lyrics to the song are ambiguous, leaving room for interpretation. It could be interpreted that the man is actually in love with the woman but is afraid to admit it. He keeps her picture on his wall and takes her calls, which are indications that he cares for her. The part where he says he's not in love multiple times may be an attempt to convince himself of his own feelings.
The repeating refrain of "Big boys don't cry" may be a reference to societal expectations of men and how showing emotions is looked down upon. It may be indicative of his struggle to reconcile his emotions and societal expectations.

When this came out in the summer of 1975 people listened to their radios without headphones and I remember being at the beach and there were a hundred little radios all over the beach tuned to the same radio station, playing this song, so as you walked along you could hear it just slightly, all the while you walked, like one long continuous play on all those tiny radios. It was magical.

Oh wow, one of those moments, so beautifully remebered. All of a sudden I feel those were actually the real good times. The past, oh the past hurts in its beauty.

Great story...but have you ever listened to this song on headphones? The stereo separation makes it even more impactful.
