Something Cool
June Christy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something cool,
Something cool,
Something cool,
I'd like to order something cool!

Something cool, (something cool)
I'd like to order something cool, (something cool)
It's so warm here in town,
And the heat gets me down,
Yes, I'd like something cool! (something cool)

My! It's nice to simply sit and rest awhile,
Now I know it's a shame,
I can't think of your name,
I remember your smile!

I don't ordinarily drink with strangers,
I most usually drink alone.
You were so awfully nice to me,
And I'm so terribly far from home.

Like my dress? I must confess it's terribly old,
But it's simple and neat,
It's just right for the heat,
Save my furs for the cold!

A cigarette? Well I don't smoke them as a rule,
but I'll have one,
It might be fun
With something cool!

I'll bet you couldn't imagine
That I one time had a house
With so many rooms I couldn't count them all!
I'll bet you couldn't imagine
I had fifteen different beaus
Who would beg and beg to take me to a ball.

I'll bet you couldn't picture me
The time I went to Paris in the Fall,
And who would think the man I loved was quite so handsome,
Quite so tall?

Well it's true, (something cool)
It's just a memory I have, (something cool)
One I almost forgot
'Cause the weather's so hot!
And I'm feeling so bad (something cool)
About a date,
Oh wait!
I'm such a fool!
He's just a guy
Who's stopped to buy
Me something cool!

Overall Meaning

The song "Something Cool" by June Christy is a tale of a woman who is feeling lonely and out of place. She enters a bar on a hot summer day and orders "something cool." She strikes up a conversation with a stranger who buys her a drink and they exchange stories. The woman talks about her past, including a time when she had a lavish house and many suitors. She recalls a trip to Paris and the man she loved there. However, she seems to be in a rut now, feeling down about missing a date.

Through this song, Christy paints a vivid picture of a woman with a past full of excitement and adventure, but who is now feeling lost and looking for something - or someone - to make her feel cool and alive again. The lyrics are cleverly written as a monologue, in which the woman's thoughts and emotions are conveyed in a stream of consciousness style. The contrast between her past and present circumstances is highlighted, with the drink and the memories serving as a temporary escape from her current reality.

The song is a classic example of the cool jazz genre, with its smooth and sophisticated sound that became popular in the 1950s. It is one of Christy's most famous recordings and has been covered by many other artists. The melancholy tone and introspective lyrics have also made it a popular choice for film and TV soundtracks.

Something so wonderful about a torch song, and very few could sing them like Miss June Christy. this song and Miss Otis Regrets make me tear up. These songs show so much vulnerability and fragility of a womans feelings. So much realism about how a woman feels, unlike today's power woman songs of denial of feeling and emotions when dealing with sadness

Had the pleasure to see June Christy, the Four Freshmen and the Stan Kenton orchestra on the Road Show tour, back in the ... well, a while back. One of my favorite musical memories. It was a delight!
