My Silver Lining
First Aid Kit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want to wait anymore I'm tired of looking for answers
Take me some place where there's music and there's laughter
I don't know if I'm scared of dying but I'm scared of living too fast, too slow
Regret, remorse, hold on, oh no I've got to go
There's no starting over, no new beginnings, time races on
And you've just gotta keep on keeping on
Gotta keep on going, looking straight out on the road
Can't worry 'bout what's behind you or what's coming for you further up the road
I try not to hold on to what is gone, I try to do right what is wrong
I try to keep on keeping on
Yeah I just keep on keeping on

I hear a voice calling
Calling out for me
These shackles I've made in an attempt to be free
Be it for reason, be it for love
I won't take the easy road

I've woken up in a hotel room, my worries as big as the moon
Having no idea who or what or where I am
Something good comes with the bad
A song's never just sad
There's hope, there's a silver lining
Show me my silver lining
Show me my silver lining

I hear a voice calling
Calling out for me
These shackles I've made in an attempt to be free
Be it for reason, be it for love
I won't take the easy road

I won't take the easy road
The easy road, the easy road

I won't take the easy road
The easy road, the easy road

Show me my silver lining, I try to keep on keeping on
Show me my silver lining, I try to keep on keeping on
Show me my silver lining, I try to keep on keeping on
Show me my silver lining, I try to keep on keeping on

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of First Aid Kit’s “My Silver Lining” suggest a person who is at a crossroads in their life. The lines convey a sense of frustration with the quest for answers to life’s big questions. The person seems tired of the journey to find their purpose and wants to escape to a place where there is music and laughter. They fear that they are stuck, neither living too fast nor too slow. The lines “Regret, remorse, hold on, oh no I’ve got to go” suggest a person who is grappling with their past and aware that they must let go and move forward to take advantage of what lies ahead.

The chorus (“Show me my silver lining”) is a plea for guidance, hinting at a desire for clarity in the journey ahead. The second verse suggests a person who has woken up and realizes that they are lost. The lines “Having no idea who or what or where I am / Something good comes with the bad” suggest that the person is undergoing some sort of break or change. Despite the uncertainty, they believe that “there’s hope, there’s a silver lining.” The final verse reiterates the point of the previous ones that the person must take control of their life and meet it head-on regardless of the challenges they face. The use of the phrase “I won’t take the easy road” implies that the person has resolved to face their fears and undertake the difficult work required of them.

@h4mst0r

The song tells you:
You have done too much. Done too much for what?

Thank you for this song. My late husband sent it to me about 7 months before he died...the first and last song he ever sent to me, saying it made him think of me. It has brought me great comfort and felt like a message of love every time I listen to this song. Very grateful.
