The Next Day
David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look into my eyes he tells her
I'm gonna say goodbye he says yea
Do not cry she begs of him goodbye yea
All that day she thinks of his love yea

They whip him through the streets and alleys there
The gormless and the baying crowd right there
They can't get enough of that doomsday song
They can't get enough of it all

Listen

Listen to the whores he tells her
He fashions paper sculptures of them
Then drags them to the river's bank in the cart
Their soggy paper bodies wash ashore in the dark
And the priest stiff in hate now demanding fun begin
Of his women dressed as men for the pleasure of that priest

Here I am
Not quite dying
My body left to rot in a hollow tree
Its branches throwing shadows
On the gallows for me
And the next day
And the next
And another day

Ignoring the pain of their particular diseases
They chase him through the alleys chase him down the steps
They haul him through the mud and they chant for his death
And drag him to the feet of the purple-headed priest

First they give you everything that you want
Then they take back everything that you have
They live upon their feet and they die upon their knees
They can work with satan while they dress like the saints
They know god exists for the devil told them so
They scream my name aloud down into the well below

Here I am
Not quite dying
My body left to rot in a hollow tree
Its branches throwing shadows
On the gallows for me
And the next day
And the next
And another day

Here I am
Not quite dying
My body left to rot in a hollow tree
Its branches throwing shadows
On the gallows for me
And the next day
And the next
And another day

Here I am
Not quite dying
My body left to rot in a hollow tree
Its branches throwing shadows
On the gallows for me
And the next day
And the next
And another day

Overall Meaning

"The Next Day" by David Bowie is a dark and powerful song that explores themes of death, persecution, and hypocrisy. The song opens with a man saying goodbye to his lover and asking her not to cry for him as he is dragged through the streets by an angry mob. The crowd is obsessed with the idea of doomsday and cannot get enough of the spectacle of punishment. The second verse takes an even darker turn as the singer describes how the priest, who is meant to be a symbol of piety and moral righteousness, takes pleasure in dressing his female parishioners as men for his own sexual pleasure. This is juxtaposed with the image of the man's body being left to rot in a hollow tree, with his shadow cast on the gallows.

The song continues to explore the idea of hypocrisy, with the lines "They live upon their feet and they die upon their knees / They can work with Satan while they dress like the saints". This seems to suggest that those in power are able to indulge in immoral behavior while still claiming to be righteous. In the end, the singer is left to die, ignored by those around him as they focus on their own desires and needs.

Overall, "The Next Day" is a powerful and disturbing song that highlights the darker aspects of human nature and the hypocrisy of those in power.

He’s 66 years old here. And still absolutely full of vitality and spirit.

Fernando Maldonado

I was so shocked when he died because he never seemed to age.

Yas

The fact that he doesn't give a single fuck and does whatever he wants with his music and videos is what makes him legendary to me.

Such a great Bowie song. Only wish he did the entire song for the video. It's also forgotten that YouTube banned this video for a few hours because it violated their terms they said. Bowie of course received tons of backlash from religious groups. Always the ever evolving musician even into his final years and always making the most original videos. There will never be another David Bowie

Junkie Tom

David Bowie is transcendent. This video exposes what people do not want to see, it's amazing. One of the best videos of 2013.
