Careless Talk
Billy Joel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Careless talk
That's what you heard about me
Jealous talk
That's what I heard about you
Everybody's telling lies
I don't even know why
Why can't people
Find something better to do

Careless talk
I don't believe what they say
I heard them talk
They say you've been putting me down
In the shadows on the phone
They won't leave us alone
They've been talking
Ever since you came around

Careless talk
Telling you I'm doing wrong
Jealous talk
Follows wherever you go

I'm aware of what you heard
Every terrible word
Everybody's making believe that they know
All of the intimate things
That we ever might have said

In the heat of a passionate moment
In a conversation shared
For the ears of nobody else
There are some things they will never hear
There are secrets I'll never tell

Careless talk
Going around on the streets
Jealous talk
I know how bad it can be

Let them stand where they fall
They don't know us at all
All that talking won't make a difference to me

Overall Meaning

In Billy Joel's song "Careless Talk", the lyrics are imbued with themes of rumor, lies, and jealousy. The song is a reflection on the culture of gossip that seems to surround us all, where people delight in talking about others without any respect for the truth or the consequences of their words. The lyrics acknowledge that rumors and lies are frequently spread about the singer and their partner, and that despite the claims of others, both remain faithful and committed to one another.

From the opening verse, Joel sings "Careless talk, that's what you heard about me / Jealous talk, that's what I heard about you". He then goes on to lament the constant stream of idle chatter and untruths that are spread about them both, stating that they don't even know why people continue to spread falsehoods. Throughout the song, Joel emphasizes that people should find something better to do than to gossip and talk about others, asking "why can't people find something better to do?"

The chorus repeats the same themes of rumors and lies, with Joel asserting that he doesn't believe what people are saying and acknowledging that his partner's reputation is also at stake. He references how intimate moments and conversations shared between them have been exposed, leading to a deeper invasion of their privacy. Despite all of this, he remains defiant, stating that he won't give in to the rumors and that careless talk won't make a difference to him.
