Walk away Renée
The Four Tops Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

And when I see the sign that points one way
The lot we used to pass by every day

Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame

From deep inside the tears I'm forced to cry
From deep inside the pain that I chose to hide

Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain burns down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries

Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain burns down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries

Your name and mine inside a house on a wall
Still finds a way to haunt me, though they're so small

Just walk away Renee
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame

Overall Meaning

In "Walk Away Renee," The Four Tops sings about a man who is desperately trying to forget Renee, the object of his affection. The song's chorus tells her to walk away and that she won't see him following her home. The narrator reminisces about places they used to pass by daily, but now those same locations only remind him of Renee. He's in so much pain that he has to hide it from others. Even though the relationship may be over, their names on a wall together continue to remind him of their love. He knows Renee is not to blame for this heartache, but he must let her go.

The song is an expression of unrequited love and heartbreak. Despite the narrator's best efforts to move on, he still finds himself thinking about Renee. The mention of the "sign that points one way" and "the lot we used to pass by every day" suggests that the two of them had a routine or certain places they went to, which now have become difficult to visit. The line "from deep inside the tears I'm forced to cry, from deep inside the pain that I chose to hide" suggests that the narrator is trying to maintain a façade of strength, even though he's deeply affected by the breakup.

An all-time classic performed by one of the greatest groups ever, led by the incomparable Levi Stubbs. Only one, Duke Fakir, is still alive now. It's sad.

Rob --- In case you're interested, I just found out that Duke Fakir wrote a book about the group. The title is "I'll Still Be There: My Life with the Four Tops ." It sounds like a "must read" for Four Tops fans.

When did he read it.

Bass Jump Blues

Like I said, Levi was so full of soul. His voice is his true soul! By the way, I am color blind! I absolutely love everybody.

@Rick Arnold thanks for this, big fan but didn't know about his book, just ordered it, cheers...

These guys were fabulous. Great voices, great songs and always so smart and classy.

The FOUR TOPS, one of my favorite groups with the great lead vocals of Levi Stubbs. Three of the Four (Obi, Lawerence, Levi) have since passed bringing sadness to the music world. May they Rest In Peace and thank Duke for carrying the torch. Just finished reading the recent book by Duke Fakir and it is a great read, could not put it down.

Oh how i wish the Tops were still around. This is one of their best recordings. They had many but they have passed. Love Levi's voice. RIP.

Rick Arnold

Levi Stubbs and Jim Morrison (The Doors) are the greatest male vocalists of the Pop/Rock Era (IMO). That said, I give a slight edge to Levi because his vocals are so passionate.
