My Man
Barbra Streisand Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, my man I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, all right
What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back on my knees some day?
For whatever my man is
I am his forever more

It's cost me a lot
But there's one thing that I've got
It's my man
Cold and wet, tired you bet
But all that I soon forget
With my man
He's not much for looks
And no hero out of books
Is my man
Two or three girls has he
That he likes as well as me
But I love him!

Oh, my man I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just despair
But I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright, all right
What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back on my knees some day?
For what ever my man is
I am his forever more

Overall Meaning

Barbra Streisand's rendition of "My Man" is a soulful ballad that captures the essence of a woman's love for her man. The lyrics are raw and poignant, expressing the complex emotions that the singer feels. It is a love that is all-consuming and all-encompassing, enveloping her whole world, despite the costs it has incurred.

The first stanza of the song highlights the desperation the singer feels, drowning in all-encompassing despair. However, the moment she's in her man's arms, the world lights up. The second stanza gives us a glimpse into the price she's paid for this all-consuming love. She forgets all her troubles and is happy as long as she's with him, no matter what he does.

The crux of the song comes in the final stanza, where she acknowledges that her love is not returned to the same extent. She's willing to go down on her knees, just to have her man back. She belongs to him, no matter what the consequences. In conclusion, "My Man" is a powerful testament to the intensity and pain of love.

did you know that Barbra specifically requested to sing this song live during filming so that she could properly caption the emotion? what a pro. what a sensational performer.

Barbra est vraiment extraordinaire, divine. Merci

I’m fairly certain it is only the beginning of the song. You can actually hear where it goes from the on set recording to a studio recording.

@superbu1

@@thephantomjedi3729 I thought that, too.

@0308frank

She recorded only the first part live. The chorus (for some strange reason) was taken from the previously recorded album "My name is Barbra" (1965). Compare the two chorus versions. They are identical, only that a richer orchestration was added in for the movie.
