I actually heard a story about two English fellas who went to Haiti for a day trip whilst on holiday in DR.

They ended up in a similar voodoo place.

The Haitians thieves were outside the building whilst the two English men were being 'cleansed' inside.

Anyway a bunch of Haitian men started gathering outside the building with the intention of either robbing them or maybe killing them.

After a while they got suspicious so decided to storm the building. The English men weren't there. Neither were any of the artifacts or furniture.

They ran through the building to the back exit/entrance only to see the two English men and a friend driving a van away full of all the stuff from the building.

As they sped away one of them shouted to the Haitians.....

"Thought you could out-rob Scousers did you?"

For those who don't get that, the English men were from Liverpool and they robbed the Haitians.

I was in Haiti years ago and encountered a Vodoo ceremony. When they asked for money I left and headed back to where I was staying. On the way I got bit by a dog. Had to leave Haiti and returned to the U.S so I could get rabies treatment. I love the Haitian people but it is a dangerous country. Kudos to you for being so brave. I would have been out of there the minute they said to take off all my clothes.

Dude, this is crazy. I was six months in Haiti with the UN. We suffered from mild dysentery every couple of weeks. A couple of our people caught dengue fever. And we were inside a military instillation. If we were off the installation we were in pairs and armed. Well all I can say is you had an experience. Glad you are safe.

The only reason they didn’t shake you down harder is that the Dominican Police, border guards and Military do not like Haitians. If they caused too much trouble they would get roughed up by the DR military. If you had been staying in Haiti they would have likely killed you and taken everything you had.

This brought back memories from some of my travels, lots of close calls. One time in particular in Mexico I was with my wife buying some items to bring back home. I was given a price and told the item was in the back of the store. We followed, went through a curtain and entered a room with four men all sitting on buckets. The guy who led us back there blocked the way back out. The item was presented and the price was now 4 times what we agreed upon. I argued and they got hostile. I know that feeling all too well and that's exactly what I told my girlfriend when we first met. When she heard about some of the places I've been to, she wanted to see for herself but I couldn't live with the thought of knowing that it could be my fault if something happens to her. Kurt is not dumb. He can read people, specially if those people lack knowledge. He can read body/facial language. He knew they tried to scam him before he left the "voodoo" place and just went with their flow until he got back to his hotel. Ended the video, and yes they eventually left bc he told the guys off behind the scenes. They got lucky to even get $70.

Handled properly and a major factor that played to his favour was the fact that once out of there and at the hotel it was more difficult for them to do much and as they knew they been filmed as well, they finally left. Of course as he uploaded the video we knew he was fine, but in situations like these is when someone can disappear and no one knows anything! Kurt, I have watched this episode and it made me worry about you. I am Dominican and this rituals are not to take lightly. Not because of bad luck, or because the saints will come after you, or the devil is going to hunt you down (am skeptical about that part) but because you was exposed. First when they are doing the ritual they are using “ácido muriatico” which is used to unclog toilets and inhaling these vapors can cause irritation in your airways and when exposed, as you was, ulcers in your throat, nose and lungs. Severe exposure would cause spasm of the larynx and edema of the lungs and vocal cords. If mixed with other chemicals (like chlorine) it will make you pass out. The “remedies” they used were probably baking soda which make it “burn”. I was very concerned when you put your hands in it …and later bathing yourself in it. This acid is a component of what Dominicans call “ácido del Diablo” because when mixed it literally melts your skin. The milk would reduce it’s effects.

Another thing that really concerned me was how exposed you were by crossing the border alone, and then followed back to your hotel to get the money. You have no idea how many people don’t make it back.

I understand that you do this for our entertainment and because you want to experience everything, but be a little more cautious. Good luck on your endeavors, am looking forward to seeing more from you!
