I Need My Girl
The National Lyrics

Davy says that I look taller
I can't get my head around it
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I need my girl
I need my girl
Remember when you lost your shit and
Drove the car into the garden
You got out and said, "I'm sorry"
To the vines and no one saw it
I need my girl
I need my girl
I'm under the gun again
I know I was a Forty-Five percenter then
I know I was a lot of things
But I am good, I am grounded
Davy says that I look taller
I can't get my head around it
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I need my girl
I need my girl
There's some things that I should never
Laugh about in front of family
I'll try to call you from the party
It's full of punks and cannonballers
I need my girl
I need my girl
I'm under the gun again
I know I was a Forty-Five percenter then
I know I was a lot of things
But I am good and I am grounded
Davy says that I look taller
But I can't get my head around it
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
I keep feeling smaller and smaller
The National's song "I Need My Girl" is a haunting ballad about a man who is struggling with feelings of inadequacy and the need for love and support from his partner. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song as the singer reveals that despite being "good" and "grounded," he feels like he is "feeling smaller and smaller" with each passing day. He then pleads for his girlfriend's presence, stating "I need my girl" twice, indicating that she is his emotional anchor and without her, he feels lost.
The second verse tells a story about a past incident where the singer's girlfriend lost control and drove the car into the garden. Despite no one seeing it, she apologized to the vines, indicating that she is empathetic and kind-hearted. The singer is reminded of this incident and once again declares his need for his girlfriend.
The final verse reveals that the singer is under pressure again and is struggling with his past identity as a "Forty-Five percenter." He knows he was "a lot of things," but he is good and grounded, and his friend Davy says he looks taller, indicating that he is improving. However, he still feels small and inadequate, and once again, he pleads for his girlfriend's presence as he navigates the pressures of life.
Overall, "I Need My Girl" is a poignant reminder of the importance of love and support in one's life. The song is a metaphor for the struggles of modern life, where individuals often feel small and alone in a world dominated by pressure and anxiety.

A question: What do you get out of this song?
This may be one of the most poignant songs for me in regards to relationships and every time I watch this, I am filled with both love for my wife and an immense amount of shame that I do not give, nor show, her enough love. I need her beyond a doubt and it is humbling that she continues to love an imperfect being like me.
So what I get out of this song is how much I truly need the woman I have in my life. She gives me the emotional and physical support I do not get from the rest of the world. She is everything to me. When the world is critical, cynical of who I am (or who I 'should' be), she is a safe haven.
It baffles me what she gets out of our relationship...
Thank you to the National for putting into words what I feel.
A side note: the old couple gets me every time. Love should be timeless and they illustrate that point.
