I know I've heard this in a movie at least once before, like it was a recurring song that I thought of as the main theme to the movie for lack of a better term...

Read that it was in The Royal Tenenbaums (a film I saw more than a decade ago and barely recall at all, so it probably isn't that), and also Man on Fire which I haven't seen at all. Anyone know what I'm thinking of?

Pretty sure it was this version rather than the original, or at least it sounded closer to this than the original by Erik Satie.

Maybe it was the royal tenenbaums and the song just stuck with me more than the movie itself, but I feel like it was something different.

Amazing song either way.

There was a time in popular music history when chart-making performers referenced music from many generations before. Satie is fantastic, his Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes are pieces that everyone should know. Sadly, a lot of music made today does not recognize the value of melody, counterpoint and harmony.

I played this album many, many times as a teenager. It was my introduction to Satie, and I can never hear the piece without remembering being 17 years old.

In the early 70s i used to play in a progressive Arena rock band. But this song caught our attention, & we had to learn it and play it live. Only one of us played flute, in the Tull style. However we faithfully played all the flutes parts.
(It helped to have Moog systems back in those days.) 😎👍

It's funny, I heard this from the B,S &T album a few years ago and I already knew it, but not by name. I searched YouTube on Google and was only able to find one other version.
I've heard it many times over the years (I'm almost 50) but I don't know where, exactly. I wish I could find other versions of this

For whatever reason, it seems so final. It makes me think of death. The footsteps are the world moving on without me. In that closed room, I'm part of the past, forgotten in time.
On a slightly brighter note, the beginning reminds me of birth, or the beginning of a journey, or something. It's scary, beautiful, be careful but don't waste it! Try to be worthy of the gift! You're blowing it, jackass!
Let's just say I don't listen to either end of the album very often.

Was stumbling through Satie's Gymnopedies at the piano in my relatives' house and one of them who knows a lot about the history of rock'n'roll comes up to me and says, you know, that was a Blood, Sweat and Tears song. Great music is great music, regardless of the genre and, to quote Picasso, good artists borrow, great artists steal.. There are some rock albums I wish I had in faithful full-score sheet music arrangements to put right alongside my Ravel, Copland, and Gershwin scores on the music shelf to study. The transcriptionists have started committing jazz greats like Art Tatum's oeuvres to full-score on paper so maybe someday they'll get around to it...

Using Audacity, you can tie them together, so that the second part plays right after the first. Another interesting effect can be produced by combining them to play simultaneously.

+ydoyou wannano There are basically three different versions of Blood Sweat & Tears, the first Al Kooper version, the second David Clayton-Thomas version, and a third version that was a revolving door of musicians. The Al Kooper version remains the most adventurous and interesting.
