I've Got The World On A String
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love!
I've got a song that I sing

I can make the rain go, anytime I move my finger
Lucky me, can't you see, I'm in love
Life is a beautiful thing, as long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let go

I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world, what a life, I'm in love

Life is a beautiful thing, as long as I hold the string
I'd be a silly so and so, if I should ever let go
I've got the world on a string, sittin' on a rainbow
Got the string around my finger
What a world
Man this is the life
And now I'm so in love!

This is the smoothest, most womanly voice EVER! RIP Sarah Vaughan and Oscar Peterson. BEAUTIFUL JAZZ ICONS!

What is there to say? Absolute perfection

WORKING WITH A SINGER - A PRIME EXAMPLE. Sarah Vaughan did have the world on a string, but what's really going on here is the wonderful interplay between JOE PASS and a very laid-back Oscar Peterson. Listen to how they share the comping duties, each in turn with great restraint in their fills. They split the solo space, each laying out during the other's half chorus, before ramping up the intensity under Sarah at the end.

Pam Tebelman

Interesting comment. You can really tell they had a great deal of respect for each other. You should listen to Oscar Peterson and Joe Pass play "Just Friends" on the BBC Special that Oscar once made. It's a fantastic interplay between Joe and Oscar. You can find it on Youtube, and the whole Special Program is wonderful and includes Count Basie as well.

Can we not forget about Louie Bellson? Thank you.

YES. Fabulous!

Yes! This is perfection: great singer, great pianist and guitarist, et al. I imagine Heaven will have these beautiful performers on much better terms than these hellish earthly ones. SUBLIME indeed. RIP SARAH, OSCAR, ET AL.
