Thirst For Romance
Cherry Ghost Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Remember me with a smile on my face
Replace the tears in your memory with
Two heroic arms that twisted lids from jars
And dragged you home after drinking in the park

Remember me with the wind in my sails
Replace the night nurse that sits at my bedside
With a whistling heart that played piano in the dark
And cheered you every step of the way

I still thirst for romance, I still thirst for romance
And the sand between my toes
Darling, I, I seen demons dancing
I seen demons dancing across factory floors

Remember me holding court in Henry's bar
Poking holes in the so-called left
Buried my mother, father, sister, brother, lover
So why'd they treat me like a child?

I still thirst for romance, I still thirst for romance
And the sand between my toes
Darling, I, I seen demons dancing
I seen demons dancing across factory floors

I still thirst for romance, I still thirst for romance
And the sand between my toes
Darling, I, I seen demons dancing
I seen demons dancing across factory floors

I still thirst for romance and the sand between my toes
Darling, I seen demons dancing across these factory floors
Floors, floors

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Cherry Ghost's song Thirst For Romance are a display of the singer's desire to be remembered fondly, despite his flaws and difficult past. The chorus, "I still thirst for romance," highlights his ongoing longing for a love that can withstand the struggles of life. He hopes that those he leaves behind will remember him for his strength and bravery - the "heroic arms that twisted lids from jars and dragged you home after drinking in the park." He wishes to be characterized by his love of life, not by the nurses and doctors who attend to him during his illness. The image of a "whistling heart" that plays piano in the dark is almost childlike in its innocence, and emphasizes the importance of retaining a sense of whimsy and joy even in dark times.

The verse that follows speaks to the singer's feelings of alienation and loneliness, despite his efforts to connect with others. He recalls "holding court in Henry's bar" and taking a critical stance towards the political left, only to be treated "like a child" by others. The final repetition of the chorus echoes his desire for love and connection, and the image of "demons dancing across factory floors" suggests a bleak and oppressive landscape that may be difficult to escape from.

This is such an under appreciated song. I heard it for the first time around when my physical therapy class was learning to care for elderly patients with neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury. It was definitely one of the moments that helped to change my perspective on what is going on inside the mind of a person who can no longer communicate as they once did. You should never assume someone in that situation has no awareness of what is going on. Some are even "locked in", where they are fully aware of everyone and everything, but have little to no control of their body. "I buried my mother, father, sister, brother, lover, so why do they treat me like a child?"
