Ruby
Ray Charles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not always what you seem
And though my heart may break when I awake
Let it be so
I only know, Ruby, it's you
They say, Ruby you're like a song
You don't know right from wrong
And in your eyes I see heart aches for me
But from the start, who stole my heart?
Ruby, it's you
I hear your voice and I must come to you
I have no choice what else can I do?
They say, Ruby you're like a flame
Into my life you came
And though I should beware
Still I don't care you thrill me so
In Ray Charles's song "Ruby," the lyrics express the allure of a woman named Ruby, who is said to be like a dream that is not always what it seems. The singer acknowledges that his heart may break when he wakes up and realizes the truth about her, but he cannot help being drawn to her. The chorus emphasizes that the singer only knows that Ruby is the one for him.
The second verse continues the metaphor of Ruby as a song, portraying her as someone who does not always make the right choices but whose heart aches for the singer. He acknowledges that she stole his heart from the start, and he cannot resist her voice, feeling like he has no choice but to come to her. The final verse compares Ruby to a flame, acknowledging the danger of being with her but stating that he cannot help being thrilled by her.
Overall, the lyrics of "Ruby" portray a passionate but risky love affair with a woman who is seen as enigmatic and captivating despite potential heartbreak. The singer of the song is willing to take that risk in order to be with her.

I was cleaning in my Kitchen today, playing Dream Lover by Bobby Darn. I have been feeling a bit down recently but then, straight after, this song came on. I’ve never listened to it before and didn’t even know who Ray Charles was. I stopped in my tracks when i heard it was my name. I now believe this song was sent to me by someone above and it makes me feel warm knowing someone is communicating with me through this song. Even with the lyrics ‘ i hear your voice i must come to you’ sends shivers down my spine !!
