Fear Of The Dark
Iron Maiden Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And when I'm walking a dark road
At night or strolling through the park
When the light begins to change
I sometimes feel a little strange
A little anxious when it's dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a phobia that someone's always there
Have you run your fingers down the wall
And have you felt your neck skin crawl
When you're searching for the light?
Sometimes when you're scared to take a look
At the corner of the room
You've sensed that something's watching you
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Have a phobia that someone's always there
Have you ever been alone at night
Thought you heard footsteps behind
And turned around and no one's there?
And as you quicken up your pace
You find it hard to look again
Because you're sure there's someone there
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
have a phobia that someone's always there
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Watching horror films the night before
Debating witches and folklore
The unknown troubles on your mind
Maybe your mind is playing tricks
You sense and suddenly eyes fix
On dancing shadows from behind
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Have a phobia that someone's always there
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
I have a constant fear that something's always near
Fear of the dark
Fear of the dark
Have a phobia that someone's always there
When I'm walking a dark road
I am a man who walks alone
Iron Maiden’s song Fear of the Dark is a haunting exploration of the irrational fear of the unknown. The song captures the dark imaginings of the singer as he walks alone at night. He is troubled by the possibility of something lurking in the shadows and the constant feeling that something is watching him. The recurrent refrain emphasises the fear of the dark and the anxiety that something or someone unknown is always near.
The lyrics are evocative in portraying the fear of the unknown. The reference to the horror films and folklore which the singer had watched imbibed his mind with unknown troubles. He suddenly senses eyes watching him from behind and dancing shadows, which add to his fear of the dark. The fear is real and palpable, and the emphasis on the constant fear and the phobia suggests that the singer cannot shake off this sense of unease and paranoia.

I am a man who walks alone
And when I'm walking 'cross my home
At night or moving horses' muck
When I hear that awful sound
I sometimes stumble to the ground
And I am anxious of the duck
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have constant fear of
Loosing half my ear
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have a phobia that
Monster's always there
Have you run your fingers down the pen
If you get stuck in there again
When you're fetching out some eggs?
This thing always knows just what you took
Stalks you out to drink your blood
You know when this thing's watching you
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have constant fear of
Loosing half my ear
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have a phobia that
Monster's always there
Have you ever been alone at night
Thought you heard quacking behind
And turned around and no one's there?
And as the chicken makes a face
You know you've made a big mistake
You've left the pen unlocked out there
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have constant fear of
Loosing half my ear
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have a phobia that
Monster's always there
Watching horror films the night before
Nightmares of being victim of
The beak just eating out your mind
Maybe the farmer's playing tricks
You sense, and suddenly eyes fix
And are both gouged out from behind
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have constant fear of
Loosing half my ear
Fear of the duck, fear of the duck
I have a phobia that
Monster's always there
When I'm walking 'cross my home
I am a man who walks alone

I was listening to this song a lot during the time I was playing Skyrim and I must say that this song goes incredibly well with Skyrim in general. This song has a badass Medieval Knight-in-shining-armor-on-horseback-with-a-huge-sword feel to it.
